Mens Knit Hat – The Parthenon – FREE PATTERN

Mens Knit HatMens Knit Hat

A great Mens knit hat. The Parthenon, is a good-looking manly hat. Currently a Free loom knitting pattern on this site. It proves that classic and sporty can be worn at the same time on the same head. Only stitch skill needed is Knit and Purl.

I love ancient Greek architectureespecially the ones that include the Doric columns. Round top over strong straight columns. Simple but powerful looking, like the man you have in mind for this hat.

Try this one out, then come back with your comments and any questions. All are greatly appreciated.

A Trick I Used: See UpDate

It’s difficult for me to stay on track. I have mild ADD. Anything that pops into my head takes precedence over what ever I’m doing or suppose to be doing. I have to use tools that let me know where I left off.

I used these white replacement pegs to keep up with my pattern. I knitted on green and purled on white. Reversed when necessary.

I wrote a short article on these little guys: Click Here

UPDATE:  These pegs are no longer available. I now use stitch markers. To get your own: Click HERE

Loom: I Used the Green 36-peg Knifty Knitter.

Yarn: I Used Red Heart Super Saver – Worsted Weight  in Hunter Green

Stitches: Knit and Purl

Cast-On: Use two strands of yarn as one. Wrap all pegs tightly – Row 1 in the pattern is the cast-on.

Note: Use the Flat Knit Stitch on Row 1. You can use the e-Wrap knit stitch after that.

Long Brim

Row 1  Flat Knit

Row 2  Knit

Row 3  Purl

Row 4  Knit

Row 5 – 15  Knit 1 , Purl 4

Top of Hat

Row 16  Knit

Row 17  Knit

Row 18 – 30  Purl 1, Knit 4

Note: If you want a little slouch in hat Knit and Purl as many rows as needed to reach your length

Close the Hat

Flat Draw-String Cast-Off

i used this pattern & I finished my hat yesterday. I am so happy how nice it turned out. Will most definitely be using this pattern again making the men’s hats to donate.
Thank you Denise for making this pattern available to us for free & thank you for this wonderful, helpful website!!

    • Denise Canela October 18, 2016 at 12:39 am

  2. Phyllis Watkins August 31, 2016 at 8:00 pm

Thanks! I’ve made two hats using this pattern so far. I really enjoyed making them. Appreciate you!

    • Denise Canela August 31, 2016 at 10:41 pm

Thanks for the Thanks Phyllis. I’m working on a matching cowl 🙂

  3. Lynn January 31, 2016 at 9:57 am

How do you do the first row which is a flat knit stitch when there is nothing on the pegs yet? Im sorry new to this and it says flat knit stitch you just lay the yarn above the loop already on peg and then flip over but there is nothing on the loom yet. Please help. Thanks

    • Denise Canela February 1, 2016 at 9:48 pm

Hey Lynn – here is a post with a video tutorial that I think will help a lot.. Click HERE

  4. Tia January 22, 2016 at 9:36 pm

I like this hat. I believe I would be able to follow this pattern, but I’m wondering is there a video for this hat. I’m a visual person.

    • Denise Canela January 24, 2016 at 12:12 am

Not yet. Compiling some mens hats for a book – will do a video at that time – late this year

      • Tia January 24, 2016 at 12:41 am

Thanks for the response. I tried making this hat, my hat did not come out like this at all. I followed the pattern, it came out more for a child than a man. What knit snitch was used to make this hat? I used the u snitch. I want to make this again.

        • Denise Canela January 25, 2016 at 9:30 pm

I used the e-Wrap knit stitch. The U- shrinks and the hat so you would have to use the Extra Large loom in that case

  5. Emily January 10, 2016 at 12:15 pm

Is the brim supposed to be folded over like the basic brims?

    • Denise Canela January 12, 2016 at 7:32 am

No Emily – this is not a folder brim

  6. Natalie December 23, 2015 at 7:14 pm

Hi! So I’m making this hat and on rows 5-15 do you mean that as a pattern to repeat on each row or knit row 6 and purl for the next 4 rows?

    • Denise Canela December 27, 2015 at 4:58 pm

It means that you will Knit 4 and Purl 1 (repeat the stitch pattern) around the whole loom for 6 rows ( Rows 5-15 )

  7. Danielle October 27, 2015 at 10:09 am

    Hi Denise,

thank you for the great site and patterns! So I made the hat and it turned out great except one tiny problem… I made it on a 31 peg loom thinking since it was for my kiddo, who is 8, it would be fine. But I also used a thicker yarn, #6 super bulky because that is the one he picked and it came out TINY. Even too small for my 1 year old! So now I’m going to try again but I’m using the same yarn and not sure if I should use the 36 peg or the 41 peg. Any advice? Is it so small because the yarn is so bulky? Or did I do the stitches too tightly maybe? I didn’t think I had. There also is not much stretch to the hat but I assume thats the material. It is 80% acrylic and 20% wool. Again, thank you for your helpful videos and the great site.

    • Denise Canela October 27, 2015 at 9:00 pm

Hi Danielle, the 31-peg loom is for a 1-2 year old and that depends on the yarn and the stitch. Three year olds need the KB Adjustable Hat loom and anyone 4 and over should use a 36-peg loom – Here is a post with a chart: Click HERE. There is very little difference between a 4 year olds head size and a 40 year old… I know that sounds crazy. And bulky is more like 3-4 strands then 2 strands of medium weight yarn . For your eight year old I would recommend the 36-peg loom and 2 strands of worsted weight #4 medium weight yarn. You’ll get the exact hat on in the picture and it will fit perfect.

  8. Teddie Schaefer October 18, 2015 at 10:48 pm

I want to do a finer gauge hat with only 1 strand of worsted. Here in Houston 2 strands is just to much. The men I am making it for have smaller heads and the green KK is just fine, I just want to do this pattern on the 3/8 gauge, how many would you suggest I cast on??? Also did you just do a basic ewrap cast on??

    • Denise Canela October 19, 2015 at 5:22 am

Hi Teddy – with one strand the row count would be more like 6 rows per inch – I would suggest the e-Wrap cast-on because you’r going to have to tighten your loops – that can be a bit tricky – try it on a baby hat first until you get enough practice – but it’s an incredible technique for loom knitters. Below are some links I think you should consider.

I live in Florida – I totally can relate 🙂

Thank you so much. My family will be thrilled I am finally making something for them. LOL

        • Denise Canela October 22, 2015 at 8:58 pm

          You are VERY welcome !

  9. Thea July 15, 2015 at 4:00 pm

I see the pattern but it doesn’t say how much yarn you need
I will be using worsted weight. I do know I will be using two strands.
So many of the patterns do not list the yarn needed

    Thank you

    • Denise Canela July 15, 2015 at 9:24 pm

Hi Thea, Thanks for the question. This pattern was one of my first. Non-the-less, I don’t put them often because all worsted weight are not exactly alike so I will give you an estimate. I would say about 80 yards.

      Hope that helps some.

  10. Rev. Janice January 19, 2015 at 12:49 pm

My youth group is going to be making hats and scarves for the homeless this year for next winter and I am looking for an easy pattern for them. Can this be made with bulky yarn to make it warmer for those men and women?

    • Denise Canela January 20, 2015 at 6:12 am

Hi ! So glad to hear you’ll be using my patterns to spread some love – THANK YOU. In answer to your question yes if you’re using what is called a large gauge loom like the Knifty Knitter, Boye or the Loops and Threads you can use bulky yarn or knit with two strands of meduim weight yarn. To follow is a link to an EASIER pattern and video tutorial for for beginners. Email me (denise@loomahat.com) with your email and I will send you an e-Book that includes these links and other that you can share with church.

  12. Renee January 3, 2015 at 11:08 pm

Thanks for your wonderful website. I’ve been passing the URL on to others and have already made a couple of simple beanies. I just started making this one and I’ve done the first 4 rows. I started on the peg that sticks out on the side and was wondering if I should just pull that off now and tuck it under.
Thanks again for all of your great tutorials!

    • Denise Canela January 4, 2015 at 1:11 pm

Yes, that should come off after the first 2-3 rows 🙂

      • Renee January 4, 2015 at 3:17 pm

Thanks! I’ll try to post a picture when I’m done 🙂

  13. Sammy November 20, 2014 at 7:55 am

Great design! I wanted to make this for myself but was wondering for rows 16 & 17 what does “knit to end” mean?

    • Denise Canela November 20, 2014 at 8:42 am

Just means to go around the loom completely. Note – some folks have asked if the hat should be made on a 41-peg loom instead of 36-pegs. My husband is a thin guy and I had him in mind when I designed this hat – plus he prefers a beanie fit. If you like your hat a bit looser consider the bigger loom.

  14. Sabra Kelly November 6, 2014 at 8:01 pm

I was wondering about the loom size.. I find that a lot of hats made on 36 peg loom are too small for most adults… Would this still work on a 41 peg loom?
    Thanks

    • Denise Canela November 6, 2014 at 10:35 pm

Hi Sabra, depending on the yarn, the stitch and the knitter – sometimes that is the case. This hat fits my husband.. but YES You can use a 41-peg.. . It will be more loose fitted.. the brim is a type of rib stitch and should flex back
      hope the helps,
      denise

  15. Jennifer December 10, 2013 at 11:26 pm

I love the look of this hat! How can I get a copy of the pattern??

Hi Jennifer, the pattern is here on the page.

  16. Cortney December 1, 2013 at 8:38 pm

Thanks for the pattern- hat turned out great!!!

  17. Laurie Blackwell November 30, 2013 at 7:40 pm

I think I am going to make this for someone for Xmas. If I wanted it to be a tad longer to cover the ears more if pulled down I add more rows to the top right? I am making it for my cousins bf but have no idea how it would fit:( I am starting on it tonight! yay!

    • Anonymous December 1, 2013 at 8:37 pm

I added three extra rows and it covers my boyfriends ears- he shaves his head- so if the person you are making it for has more hair maybe add a few more 🙂

  18. Becky Lofthouse November 26, 2013 at 10:35 pm

Denise, thank you for sharing all of this wealth of info with the rest of us; my experience is with making hats in crochet but I just finished a basic hat which I made on the circular loom knit and I really like this pattern for a man’s hat. I will give it a try using your pattern and once completed will email you a photo of completed project. thanks again

Thank YOU for all your kind words. I greatly greatly appreciate it. And PLEASE send pictures ! : )

  21. Sally Ellerby November 6, 2013 at 5:16 pm

Could you please tell me the difference between the flat knit e-wrap used in the first row of this hat and a regular e-wrap. Thank you.

    • Denise Canela November 6, 2013 at 11:23 pm

Hi Sally, with an e-wrap you wrap the yarn around the peg then knit the stitch. With a flat stitch – you lay the working yarn on the peg ( do not wrap) – above the yarn (loop) that is already on the peg. Take the bottom loop over the top loop and knit over.
      I hope that helps

      • Sally Ellerby November 7, 2013 at 3:25 pm

        Yes, thank you again!

  24. Carla August 28, 2013 at 6:16 am

hi, I used a different loom so my stitches are smaller. could you measure first part of the hat in inches for me and total length of hat?
    thanks!

    • Denise Cenela September 11, 2013 at 7:29 am

Carla, sorry about the delay in response. The top of my hat is 4 inches.. a bit over 8 inches in total.

  25. Leiza August 18, 2013 at 8:24 pm

I’m kinda confused on the Knit 1 Purl 4 part. I have the 36-peg loom but I get an extra peg at the end. Any clarification is appreciated.

    • Denise Cenela August 18, 2013 at 9:03 pm

Hey Leiza, Alternate that last one with a knit then a purl .. that will keep it from looking so much a a seam. Hope that helps

      • Leiza August 18, 2013 at 10:11 pm

Thank you! I kinda just did a knit on it, but it’s totally fine. I will do what you suggested on the Top of the Hat section. Thanks again! 🙂

      • joshua! October 26, 2013 at 1:04 pm

My wife found the same issue.
She modified it to Knit 1 Purl 3 and it comes out even. Likewise, Purl 1 Knit 3 for the top of the hat.

  27. Andrea August 5, 2013 at 2:41 pm

Thanks for the lovely pattern and easy to follow instructions. I’m still new to loom knitting, so this was my first attempt at purl stitch. I was happy with the design, but not the thickness of my cheap yarn. I had doubled up on it, but it still felt thin to me, so I will try a thicker type next time. Here’s a link to a photo of my husband modelling the hat. Thanks again!
