Ombre Beanie Pattern Video for the Extra Large Round Loom

Ombre Hat Beanie Pattern Video Tutorial for Circular Looms

Loom Knit Ombre Beanie Pattern

Ombre means having colors or tones that shade into each other. I love this style of color play. It’s much easier to do this with needles then a loom. But with the right yarn and a cool beanie pattern you can make a really easy hat you’ll love.

Below is a step by step video tutorial

Hat Pattern Supplies and Information

Supplies:

Loom knit ombre beanie hat

Image Credite: Dorice Iceanglemade on Instagram

Notes: The pattern is very easy. Just rows of knits and purls. You will be using the U-wrap version of the knit stitch throughout the project.

Loom: Extra Large Round Loom. I used the 41-peg Extra Large Loom

Yarn: Approximately 135 yards of Worsted Weight Ombre color yarn.
I used Ice Yarn Brand in the Fan Wool Red, Yellow. Friendly note: this yarn is sold on Amazon .I bought mine from eBay. Either way the best price is when you buy in lots of at least 4.

Hook: Any Loom Hook. I used the Knifty Knitter with a Grip. The one on the video was a custom-made gift from Marrie Joe Sapha on Etsy (THANK YOU Mary Joe ! )

Yarn Needle: Any Yarn Needle. I use Susan Bates

Hey Denise, I have made a scarf and now I want to make this hat, I love it!! I don’t have multi color yarn but I want to use three different colors to pull out the specks of color in my scarf. Do I just change colors like I do on a regular hat or is there a certain way I need to switch colors. This is for my breast cancer doctor and I’m looking to have it done in a few days lol, I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you so much for all you do to make it possible for us to make beautiful things!! Lynn

    • Denise Canela November 3, 2016 at 8:41 pm

Hi Lynn, it’s best to change colors on the knits instead of the purls.

  2. Margaret Epperheimer October 3, 2016 at 12:30 pm

I love this hat, but I noticed that you are only using one strand of yarn with the loom. Is the hat thick enough just using one strand? I assume this is a #4 weight yarn you are using.

    • Denise Canela October 3, 2016 at 7:56 pm

Hi Margaret – Yes and Yes. The yarn itself can help determine warmth as much as the yarn weight.

  3. Cathy August 27, 2016 at 9:03 pm

A friend if mine loved my hat– the Rolling Ombre so much she wants me to make a mermaid tail blanket for her granddaughter in this pattern. I am making a few changes and am using the oval loom. Wish me luck!¡!!

    • Denise Canela August 28, 2016 at 9:51 pm

That will be beautiful – I had thought of the same thing – but if your able and you have the time try a small version first – that is what I plan to do

      • Cathy August 29, 2016 at 8:12 pm

Good idea. I will keep you posted

  4. Cathy July 20, 2016 at 12:19 pm

Thank you, I will give it a try!!

  5. Cathy July 20, 2016 at 12:18 pm

Denise, thank you again!!!! I did the three step stitch which you already know I loved. I did the Rolling Ombre yesterday, I love it!!!! I finished it in one day. I used Red Heart super saver melonberry and it looks awesome, I am going to make a matching scarf and maybe fingerless gloves or mittens, not sure yet. You do an amazing job with the patterns and the videos!!! You totally rock!!! Thank you again!!!!

  6. Cathy July 16, 2016 at 1:59 pm

Hi Denise, Thank you for all the patterns and videos!!! You do an awesome job and make everything so easy!! I made two of the Three Step Hats, first in regular yarn, it was ok but did not drape well. I made the second one in cotton yarn and added two more rows for added length. I love it and it drapes so nicely. I have a friend who wants a matching scarf, is that even possible?? Thank you again, sorry this is so long.

    • Denise Canela July 19, 2016 at 10:33 pm

Hi Cathy, yes it is possible follow the pattern flat.

      • Anonymous July 25, 2016 at 2:18 pm

  10. Shelley February 9, 2016 at 8:02 pm

I used Loops and Threads Charisma yarn bought on sale at Joanne’s. It is a self striping yarn. I used the Mulberry Bush color and the hat turned out really cute! Which I could post a picture of it…..

    • Denise Canela February 9, 2016 at 10:31 pm

Hi Shelley – thanks for the info – you can post a picture on the Facebook page

  11. Stephanie February 4, 2016 at 2:29 pm

Where can you get yarn like this?? I have looked at Walmart, Michaels, joans…. No where has color changing yarn.

    • Denise Canela February 8, 2016 at 9:07 am

Stephanie remember that Ombre is not self-striping – I find that Ice yarns are the best for this but here is a listing many brands: Click HERE

  12. Pamela January 31, 2016 at 9:09 am

Hi Lisa, I am loving your videos! I just finished a beautiful spiral hat and fingerless gloves. Now I’m on to this Ombre hat, which is adorable by the way ? Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

    • Denise Canela February 1, 2016 at 9:49 pm

Hi Pamela – I will assume this comment is for me, although I’m not Lisa. If I’m right – THANK YOU :)…. denise

  13. Amy Winterstein January 13, 2016 at 3:13 pm

Hi Denise, I want to make the Ombre Beanie, and want your opinion before I start. I would like it to fit like as a beanie, not a ‘slouch’ hat. Since my head is a little smaller than adverage, do you think it would work using the green, 36-peg loom (Knifty Knitter)…? I’m a little afraid that the extra large loom would be too large for me?

    • Denise Canela January 17, 2016 at 12:16 am

The mannequin has a head that is a bit smaller then average and this hat contracts quite a bit – for a shorter fit I recommend decreasing the number of rows on the brim but still use the large loom.

      • Amy Winterstein January 17, 2016 at 10:55 am

        Thanks Denise…that helps!

  14. Hope January 10, 2016 at 11:53 am

Can this be made on other looms I have the purple loom, what you think?

    • Denise Canela January 12, 2016 at 7:34 am

I think it will look good. But ….. remember that the 48-peg loom is a smaller loom (in diameter) then the 41-peg so the hat will be more of a beanie with less slouch.

  15. Briana Young December 9, 2015 at 10:56 am

    Hi Denise,

The yarn required for this project is sold out all over the internet! Do you know if there is another yarn maybe in a different color that would work for this? Thanks so much for all you do!!

    • Denise Canela December 9, 2015 at 8:55 pm

Hi Briana, there is no “required” yarn any worsted weight yarn will work. The color may have sold out but you can get the brand in both Amazon and eBay. Click some of the links on the page or just Google Ice yarn – you can even find it on Etsy

    • Cynthia December 26, 2015 at 12:14 am

Briana, I am using this wonderful yarn by Lion Brand: Landscapes: Apple Orchard.
It was a little pricey but oh so worth it! I will post a pic when I am done ??

  16. Briana Young December 8, 2015 at 8:03 pm

    Hi Denise,

Thanks so much for all of your videos! They have been my constant companions the past couple of weeks! I love this hat, but the yarn it requires is sold out all over the place. Do you know if there is another color/type that would work? Thanks for your help!

    • Denise Canela December 9, 2015 at 9:07 pm

I believe the color is completely sold out but the Ice yarn is available on Amazon , eBay and Etsy – even directly on the Ice Yarn site. Clicks the links on the post.

  17. Kate and em November 26, 2015 at 2:37 pm

Thanks for the video, it’s the best way to learn, however I fear I may be starting the cast off wrong, and the video is fast so I can’t catch it. When you do the cast off wrap, does the wrap start in front of the pin, or behind please?

    • Denise Canela December 9, 2015 at 9:58 pm

Hi Kate – sorry for the delay – not sure I understand your question but as long as there is a loop on the peg – you can wrap from front to back or back to front – makes no difference in this pattern.

  18. Star October 21, 2015 at 10:21 am

    Hi, Denise.

Just want to say thanks for the videos. I’m very much a visual learner and being new to loom knitting, your videos help greatly. My first hat I just finished was the slouch hat with flap over brim and it turned out great thanks to your video!

I’m wondering if you have any advice on how to scale the ombré hat down for a toddler? Do I still do the same number of purl and knit rows just fewer sets? Or do you also suggest fewer purl rows so they would be less bulky since it’s going on a smaller head?

    Thanks again!
    Star

    • Denise Canela October 22, 2015 at 9:03 pm

Hi Star – for the average toddler use the 36-peg, reduce the brim by 6- 8 rows, then decrease each section ( the knits and purls ) by 2 rows each. It should work out fine.
      Let me know

  19. Lisa October 20, 2015 at 1:31 am

Hi Denise! I have started the Ombre Beanie Hat. Casted on with the U wrap on a 41 peg loom. Knitted 5 rows U wrap. Next is 20 more U wrap stitch…correct? The cast on and the 5 U wrap comes out approximately 1-1/2″. I know after 25 stitchedI will make a brim and knit off. I see you have 94 rows and then begin decreased cast-off. Won’t this end up extra long? Love the pattern, but, extremely afraid I will make another stocking cap. I gor a kick out of the husband wearing the extra slouchy! As I told you before, I knitted a long stocking cap, don’t want to make the same mistakes twice.

Whenever you have some time or
    Not, please let me know.
Thanks for your patience. Lost Lisa..AGAIN

    • Denise Canela October 20, 2015 at 8:33 pm

Hi Lisa, the cast on doesn’t count as a row. So complete your cast-on then the 25 rows of U-wrap which is the brim. You fold those 25 rows, knit-off then start your sets of rolls . I suggest you watch the video completely before starting the pattern. When you get ready to knit get a stitch counter and follow the pattern.
If you’re knitting with the 41-peg loom and worsted weight yarn you should have the same result. I will tell you that this hat knits-up pretty quickly. I did 2 in one afternoon.
Give it a try – let me know if you have any other questions

  20. Heather Miner October 16, 2015 at 11:24 pm

Is this hat made with 2strands or one?

    • Denise Canela October 17, 2015 at 10:53 am

Yeah – I know it’s hard to believe – I’ve been asked lots of times – but it’s just one strand of worsted weight yarn.

      • Heather Miner October 17, 2015 at 11:35 pm

        Thank you very much ?

  21. Jane October 14, 2015 at 5:23 pm

    Love the patterns thanks?

    • Denise Canela October 14, 2015 at 8:16 pm

Thanks for the Thanks Jane !

  22. Lisa October 14, 2015 at 11:04 am

Hi Denise! I just completed the Slouchy Cable Hat. I went step-by-step according to the instructions via video and print. OMG! It turned out badly. I don’t know what I did wrong. The cables are beautiful, but it turned out so long and. I used the amount of rows per instructions except I used a 41 peg loom. I try to use the same supplies as described too. I just didn’t use the same loom. What do you think I might have done incorrectly? I know you can’t see it but, it turned out to be 16″ long. I’m laughing and crying at the same time. Your input would be greatly appreciated. I need some.
Thanks so much Denise, you’re wonderful! Lost Lisa

    • Denise Canela October 19, 2015 at 5:37 am

Wow ! I am baffled – talk about a SUPER slouchy. BTW, Did you see the picture (Smurf Hubby) ? Different looms and different yarns can make a difference – shouldn’t be this drastic but I would just suggest reducing the number rows A LOT . Do a swatch with the yarn and loom you’re going to use – that way you will know how many rows “You” need. We knit differently – some a bit looser – some a bit tighter – there are so many variables.

For a swatch – just knit enough rows to give you an inch – then you can just do the math.

      Hope that helps

      • Lisa October 19, 2015 at 7:20 pm

Thanks Denise! I think I made a stocking cap actually! HA! I will take your advice and appreciate your help very, very much. Have a wonderful day! Lisa

  23. Lisa October 13, 2015 at 12:13 am

Thanks for posting this Ombre Beanie Pattern Denise. I will try this after my current project is finished. You’re wonderful! I’ve learned basically everything from you. Thanks for your video’s and supply suggestions. It’s going to get crowded in my crafting corner, but it’s too enjoyable.

    • Denise Canela October 13, 2015 at 7:58 am

Thanks for the Thanks Lisa !
