Basket Weave Stitch Pattern on a Loom

Basket Weave Stitch

Basket Weave Stitch

There are many versions of the Basket Weave Stitch. On this post I will give you the loom knitting pattern for the simple version and a more complex alternative with a video tutorial that I like a lot better and I believe most of you will too. It’s not difficult just knits and purls. I translated this one from a needle knitting pattern and of all the ones I have done lately this one went rather fast and with little complication. I can already see a hat and scarf in the near future.

If you are a beginner I suggest that you master the simple stitch version before moving on to the other. But if you feel spunky enough to dive in than at least watch the video for step by step instruction completely before attempting your project.

Stitch Patterns

Read the pattern notes for instruction and ideas. Remember that this is a Stitch Pattern and not a project pattern so there is no cast-on or cast-off instruction or recommendation listed. If you want me to recommend a cast-on or cast-off tell me what kind of project you are doing ( like say a hat or a square ) with the question in the comment section and I will do my best to answer you.

Supplies I Used:

Loom: KB Adjustable Hat Loom

Hook: KB Hook

Yarn: Vickie Howell Sheepish in Yellow-ish

BasketWeave Stitch the Simple Version

Basket Weave StitchYou can adjust the stitch to have smaller or larger squares by adding or subtracting the number of Knits and Purls and rows. Just make sure that the sets of numbers stay the same. It will give you a bit of a different effect.

Note for Flat Panel or in Round:  The pattern is read left to right when knitting in the round. For a flat panel you read from left to right for odd number rows and right to left for even number rows.

What cast on and cast off do you suggest for basket weave stitch for a hat and a dishcloth?

    • Denise Canela August 25, 2016 at 7:26 pm

Barb for the dish cloth I would do the same technique I would use on all my squares. Here is a post I use for my stitch patterns – but I would apply it to the dishcloth: Click HERE. For a hat – it really depends on the look her trying to – me – I would do a simple low key single rib-stitch

I know you just do stitch patterns but it would be nice just to mention for a scarf I would cast on xx # of pegs. ?. Also it just it me as I was working on this patter how do you get you work to come out facing you? Mine always goes to the middle? Your work is always so pretty, the tension is always just right. One day I hope to get there!

    • Denise Canela August 3, 2016 at 9:50 pm

Jo – I don’t show the cast on because you might be using your stitch pattern for a VERY different project then I do – it’s bit hard to explain – I did do a post and a video to better explain. Also if you’re a beginner – stitch patterns are not the best way to learn. Start instead with project patterns after you master those you can switch the stitch pattern to one that you like. For a better explanation Click HERE

I love this pattern! (The more complicated basket weave.) Can you tell me how many pegs you logged on using the hat loom?
    Thanks, Jo

    • Denise Canela August 1, 2016 at 10:11 pm

Hey Jo, since it was just the stitch pattern and not a project I did not make note of that. Sorry …

  4. Arlene Paterra November 26, 2015 at 8:42 am

Thank you so much for all the work you did to teach and share this pattern. I am new to loom knitting and loving it. What I was wondering if I could loom knit a scarf with this pattern on a rake loom using both sides of the loom. So that it does a double sided scarf with the same pattern on both sides. I hope I have worded what I am trying to ask correctly. I just love the basket weave look. I am now croching a basket weave hat. But after watching your video I would like to make a scarf also, but on the loom.

    • Denise Canela November 30, 2015 at 8:04 pm

Hi Arlene – I don’t know of any. When I do knit on long looms – which is VERY rare – I only use 1 rake… sorry

  5. Sarah lynn September 8, 2015 at 11:35 am

On the pattern for flat panel, it says multiples of 6 plus 2 AND edges… Well I know what to do for my edges but, the plus 2 isn’t written into the pattern? It only shows the multiples of 6 so do we knit or purl these plus 2?

    • Denise Canela September 8, 2015 at 2:45 pm

I Sarah, I didn’t write it in, just because in reality most people add what ever border they prefer. I personally like the Seed Stitch over the Garter for my edges, but most folks add the garter stitch. So I leave it up to the knitter to decide. The plus 2 just stabilizes the stitch pattern – When I’m adding it to a design I tend to use Knits
      Hope that helps

      • Sarah lynn September 8, 2015 at 9:00 pm

Ahhh! Yes that helped very much! Just did my first square and it’s perfect. Thank thank you ? love your videos btw, yours are the only ones that cover everything and are clear enough to see what you are actually doing. You are an amazing teacher. Lol, I’m pretty much ready to just throw out all my expensive books now because with your videos, I don’t need to struggle with them! ?

        • Denise Canela September 8, 2015 at 9:24 pm

I hear you Friend – I have pulled lots of hair out my hair over these books. Sometimes it easier to make up your own patterns. 🙂
          Happy I could help.

    What does KB mean

    • Denise Canela August 23, 2015 at 6:25 pm

It means Knitting Board. I love this loom for stitches ! Can be a bit expensive but You can get it with a coupon.

  7. Tala July 21, 2015 at 10:45 am

Hello and thank you for the wealth of information on your blog and YouTube. I’ve made several hats on Loops/Threads round looms and am ready to make a decision about upgrading between CinDwoods or KB All In One Small Gauges 1/2″ only.

My primary work will be hats (for long dreads) and scarves to match. The KB Hat Loom is nice but there are patterns that need more/less pegs when using small gauge. The KB All In One seems to let me do both (i think). The CinDwoods Afghan Large seems to be limited to only one size hat.

My thoughts are leaning towards the KB All In One 28″ but all this is so confusing.

After all this research I am finding I will have to make several purchases of looms to achieve the sizes I want and to be able to use yarn without using two strands. So will I have to make several purchases :((.

Kind Regards. Will be donating on your YouTube today LOVE your open heart indeed.

    • Denise Canela July 21, 2015 at 10:02 pm

Hi Tala (Love Love Love your name – sounds like I’m singing when I say it),

This is a tough question my dear Loomy – I like them all. I try to stick to looms that are readily available because I’m serving the public which is the only reason why I don’t do CinDwood (expense but they are AWESOME-AWESOME). Stuff just turns our right every time. Stitches are tight and beatiful. Here is a hat I made on a CinD: Click HERE. The video was one of my first and is, as my mom would say, No so good.

Right now I am really liking my KB Adjustable Hat loom. Easy to carry – light weight – a lot of options and flexibility. Every craft store, brick and virtual is selling it. So far it’s made everything I wanted except newborn hats. In fact I have 3 of these looms. Got one with a 50% off coupon – I have ADD and keep 3-5 projects going all the time. 🙂

Hey And Thanks for Your Support – VERY MUCH APPRECIATED !

      • Tala July 22, 2015 at 12:31 am

Thank you Denise for your input. What is confusing is I see many patterns but they call for different peg count (40, 41, 60, etc) and was hoping KB Adjustable would suffice…so long as I can make the crown of the hats very wide…

Tighter and definitely smaller stitches is my aim again primarily for hat and scarves.

You are welcome, but more appropriately THANK YOU!!

        • Denise Canela July 22, 2015 at 9:55 pm

Tala – remember that peg count is not really size. The KK 48-peg loom makes a small hat then the 41-peg KK – the peg count is really about gauge. Knifty Knitter got folks use to thinking more pegs means bigger hat. Instead ask the size of the base of the loom. Also if you look at my Rib Stitch Hat – it was made with the 41-peg KK loom (large gauge loom) and the stitch is tight: Click HERE

The U-wrap knit stitch is going to give you a tight stitch even with a large gauge loom: Have you seen my post on the 4 versions of the Knit Stitch : Click HERE

          • Tala July 25, 2015 at 3:00 pm

Broke a peg inside the Adjustable KB Loom today that I just receive less than 48 hours ago…..at least it is the 9 peg “rail” they are quite hard to take out WHEW my left middle finger is so way tender. I purchased it for the 1/2″ option anyway..I’m still quite happy with it teehehe!

            Kind Regards~

            • Denise Canela July 25, 2015 at 8:10 pm

Hey Tala, contact them – they may be willing to send you spares.. consider getting a craft store coupon and buy another one for spares. That’s what I did.

  8. Maria Teleguz June 8, 2015 at 10:50 pm

So to do a square with the basketweave you still use 23 pegs or is there a different number of pegs to use? thank you in advance!

    • Denise Canela June 9, 2015 at 8:36 am

The number of pegs depends on the project and the size of the item. This post is only for the stitch not a project. Some people prefer a 6×6 square – some prefer 8×8 – each takes a different number.

  9. Yvonne Nelms May 31, 2015 at 6:12 pm

I enjoy watching you. Regarding the basket weave…I would like to do a square. Could you please do a video with instructions.

    • Denise Canela June 2, 2015 at 10:45 am

Here is a post with an instructional video on how to do a Square just change the stitch to the Basket Weave: Click HERE

  10. Teresa Matson May 31, 2015 at 6:31 am

I really like the look of the second one a lot! One of my current WIPs is a summer blanket made with cotton yarn. I am using squares and wanted to make a sampler blanket. I will be using this one I hope. Will have to do some math. I will be using for some dish cloths and dish towels I am making! I love the making them and they work so much better than the ones you buy! I absolutely love the fact that you give written pattern as well as a tutorial video! Even if I understand the written pattern I always watch the video! I have learned quite a bit from you! Thank you!

    • Denise Canela May 31, 2015 at 9:23 am

Thank YOU for the Thank you Teresa. Your kind words are more then greatly appreciated !
