Loom Knit Easy Pattern for Fingerless Gloves
This is an easy loom knitting rib stitch pattern. It’s made up of just knits and purls for a nice pair of Fingerless Gloves. Great for both men and women. Includes text and video tutorial for us visual learners.
I wanted to limit this design to one size fits all for adults which is why I choice the double rib stitch. The fabric stays snug for small hands and stretches well for those bigger man hands. I find them elegant and practical. Hope you like it and will give me feedback in the comment section at the very end.

Denise, I followed the instructions for fingerless gloves
Unfortunately for me they are too big for my hands.
The pattern is AWESOME. But do you have a suggestion on what would work best for next time.. I am like my own test subject. I want to make a pair for my daughter.
But her hands are even smaller than mine… RSVP me PLEASE and thank you
Were the glove to long – should not be to wide – because the pattern is a rib stitch and contracts a lot. Did you use a chunky yarn or knit with 2 strands?
Hello there from Athens Greece. I am attempting these fingerless gloves using two strands of yarn that are thinner than what you used. I’ve done up to the point where I should begin the hole for the thumb but they seem awfully short to me after the 30 rows. If I begin the hole now, the finished item will only just cover my wrists. I think I need to continue by adding more rows so would like to know, on average, what the distance should be between the cuff and the thumb-hole. I’m also a bit concerned that the number of rows you use for the hole won’t be enough. Obviously I will need to keep track of any changes I make so that I make the second glove the same! Help!
Hi Looby,
If you look at the gray pair in the picture – that is a man’s hand-That is my husband – he is 6 feet tall and weighs 165 lbs. The gloves he is wearing were made with this pattern using 1 strand of yarn. I know it feels a bit scary but take the dive sister ! If when done you’re not happy – undo the yarn and make the changes. Let me know this end of the story – now I want to know what you finally decided to do 🙂
Denise,
Love your videos and think you’re an amazing teacher! Thank you for all the guidance, as I’m definitely a beginner. I was just wondering, and this may be a completely stupid question, but how do you keep track of the number of rows you have? I’ve tried counting them in my head, marking on the loom…and even counting the threads, which is ,to me, just as confusing.
Do you have a method or a simple way of keeping track of the number of times you’ve gone around the loom?
Again, sorry if this is a silly question, but so far, it’s my biggest issue. Your videos and written instructions are absolutely perfect!
Thanks so much!
Hi Amanda- First, there are NO stuped or silly questions. I use several methods depending on the complexity of the project. I mostly write a dash for every row or I use a counter: Click HERE
Does it matter what size yarn?
Yes – it can change the size and the look of the project
Denise you make loom knitting so enjoyable and your videos are great. I followed the video for the fingerless gloves pattern but my gloves don’t fit snug enough for a woman. I thought I wasn’t tightening my stitches enough so the second one I did I made a conscious effot to tighten them. However, my gloves was still too loose. I used Impeccable yarn medium 4. Any suggestions on what I’m doing wrong?
I am about 8 rows in and it seems a bit tight on the purl ones. The center looks like a star. Should I keep going? Redo?
What should I do?
Gina, hard to say without seeing the project. Keep in mind that you haven’t stretched your stitches. As for the purl stitches they tend to be more loose then the Uwrap so hard make a recommendation. What type of yarn are you using and consider steam blocking which makes fabric softer
Thank you, Denise, for all your website and videos. I have made many of the hats you have here. I have been working with donated yarn for Hat Huggers here in Christmas Valley, OR. Though I am trying to make sure that I put a lot of love to the recipient of each piece, I am learning so much in this process that I wonder who benefits the most.
Anyway, here is the latest creations, thanks to you. Sorry, the pictures aren’t the best but, hopefully, you get the idea. http://www.ravelry.com/projects/Darravels/chain-links-slouchy-hat
Darlene, first and foremost – THANK YOU for being a giver – I soooooooooo love a giver. You guys just make me happy. I get worked up and fueled. Plus I so love Hat Huggers !!!! You creations are both beautiful but I must say that a double love the pink and blue – such happy colors. GREAT JOB Friend.
Big Hugs !
I love the colors in the picture with the shades of brown by Tameko. Do you know what yarn was used? Thanks
I sent her a message – will post it when she answers
I loved doing this pattern, but my gloves ended up being pretty wide. I used a 24 peg loom. Any ideas how to make it smaller??
Sydney – they should NOT be wide at all – are you knitting the e-Wrap knit stitch instead of a U-wrap?
I did use the U-wrap. It might have turned out that way because i did a double strand which might have made it wide?? I am going to try and do another one with a single string and see if it works this time! Luckily i only made one so far and it is my first time doing this pattern. I’ll let you know how it turns out.
Sydney, Watch the video completely before trying the pattern, make sure you’re using the small loom and for sure – let me know how it goes.
Rose Mary Sabel here. I commented earlier on having a pattern for a hat with a brim and ear flaps. Well I figured it all out myself and it is easy. I make my first earflap then I make the second one and continue around the ring wrapping once around. Hook over where earflaps are you have 2 loops. Then you continue on with the hat as you usually would and work your way right into a brim! I have made quite a few and it works great. Just wanted to share this with anyone who is interested. Thank You:)
Thank you very much for your wonderful presentations. I have searched many sites since joining a Stitch and Bitch group with my girlfriends in Nov. 2015 and yours is the best by far. Your calm voice and detailed tutorials are a wonderful guide.
We live in Canada on the Ontario/Minnesota border in a town of 8,000. Our winters are very long and very very cold. Making scarves first and now hats and gloves is such a joy and wonderful way to spend our winter indoor time. I am 52 and I have never been succeful when it comes to this type of craft. It makes me feel calm and provides me with another way of nurturing my grown children and now grandchildren. Thank you, once again.
Thank you Norma Jean – for all your kind words. I really appreciate them. Hope some day to make it to Canada. Don’t care much for travel but I have always wanted to go there. I would get to wear a hat and scarf. I live in Florida where 70 degrees is considered winter. 🙂
How much yarn did it take to make both? The yarn I use has 70 yards in a skein, will that be enough?
Sorry, I didn’t add the amount of yarn – you will need between 100 – 120 depending on how you knit and how long you make the gloves
Thanks! Do you think if I make it shorter and maybe don’t do the cuff part, I’ll be able to maybe it with my 70 yards of yarn?
You should – if you keep the arm section really short
What loom size do you use for a 5 to 7 year old child for this pattern?
A KB sock loom – which is adjustable – or CinDwood has a large variety of looms that work well for gloves : http://cindwoodlooms.com/product/epattern-garter-edge-fingerless-gloves/
Beautiful! So you just use single stand worsted weight rather than double? Just wanted to make sure I didn’t misunderstand. I know the u-wrap stitch is smaller. I don’t mind doubling, but when I use self-striping I prefer not to.
Yes Jan – I used single strand – and Yes for self-striping that’s you best bet 🙂
They turned out beautifully! And so quick. My niece loves them, and I’ll be making them for my other nieces as well. Your patterns are great and your creativity is obviously endless!
So glad you liked the pattern and that was useful. And thank you for all the kind words I sooooooooooooooooooooooooo appreciate it !
Big hugs !
Oh my gosh a huge thank you for this video and free pattern…I just LOVE it and the gloves!!! Your video is amazing and so simple to follow…thank you thank you!!! I see many many more of these in my future. I am also going to try these without the finger hole and put some lace on it to make those fancy little boot cuffs…it will work out perfect. So excited.
Elaine, so glad you liked the pattern – your excitement is awesome… Thank YOU !
I love these iv made these for myself now I’m making pair for aunt for Christmas and the hat probably too thanks for sharing this
You’re Welcome
Does this take just 1 skein of yarn for 1 pair?
Susan, different skeins of yarn have different yardage – my 1 skein can have 150 yards and your can have 70. So the answer is – it depends on the skein
How can this pattern be convert for children, for the ages of 3-7?
Thanks for your help.
You would need an All in One loom for a smaller option – the 12-peg flower is to small – this one is a bit large – although with the elastic rib stitch depending on the child it might work just by decreasing the number of rows at the arm – the thumb and then again at the hand.
you totally lost me when you did the thumb
you like totally lost me too
Hello Jeff( DeezNuts ),
I was holding onto this for a while because I couldn’t believe how petty some folks can be. I have no idea why you would come to my website and add 2 comments as if you were 2 different people agreeing that there’s a problem with my pattern. In case you didn’t know and you go around doing this on other peoples website – Your VPN ( which identifies the source of the comments ) is unique to you, Dummy – so I know that you and “DeezNuts” are the same person. Wow – how sad ….. you really need a hobby.
I am repeating this comment on DeezNuts’s comment in case you have a split personality disorder.

Hi Denise,
I love your website and your videos. You do very well at explaining things and I appreciate that since I am brand new at loom knitting. I love it and I am excited about it! What I am looking for right now is a pattern or video for a hat that has both the brim and ear flaps. Don’t know if that is possible to have both on one hat or not. Need adult and toddler. If not do you have a video for just the ear flaps? Thank you for your time.
Not yet Rose Mary – but Tuteate has a video on doing a a hat with ear flaps – Click HERE
Hello! Thanks for all your beautiful patterns and easy instructions! 🙂
I was wondering if you could help explain a strange phenomenon? I tried making these gloves using an ewrap throughout, and it looks like the stitches keep “slanting” toward the left (I knit clockwise) – as in, each row seems to shift slightly more to the left than the one before it, so that the whole stitch lands up looking diagonal. The same happens with a knit one row, purl one row pattern. Is that just the nature of these stitches?
I made four single gloves, with and without “brims”, just to see if I maybe made a mistake somewhere, but the same happens every time. It’s driving me bonkers! lol
Thanks in advance for your expert advice!
Yes the eWrap slants – as you “stack” rows it may appear like it’s slanting more. Sometimes that is the look I want – most of the time it isn’t – plus it’s a VERY loose stitch. I don’t use it that often. Here is a comparison of all 4 versions: Click HERE
Thank you! 🙂 Now I can sleep lol. I wonder why the e-wrap looks perfect on a hat – as in, the “ladders” stay nice and straight vertically – but slant like mad on the gloves? Every craft has its mysteries, I suppose! 😀
I have just began to knit using a loom. Your patterns are very good for a beginner. However I have some problems in following written direction and video are key for me. On the fingerless glove I am having major problem with the thumb hole. I keep ending up with two holes. Not sure what I am doing wrong. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Joan, are you able to send me a picture? denise@loomahat.com
I just finished my first pair of fingerless gloves! They are so nice. Now I am going to make the hat. This set is going to be a Christmas present for one of my grand-daughters! Thanks for being such a wonderful teacher!
Thanks for the Thanks Paulette … let me know how it goes with the hat – if you get stuck with the loose loops technique (this is where most people get stuck) there is a separate post for that one : Click HERE
Can I do the figure 8 stitch if I’m using 2 strands? I love and appreciate you and all you do for us loomers. You make looming in life a bit easier.
Hi Barb, yes you can – I use the figure 8 with 2 strands in the Slub Yarn Slouchy. Click HERE
… And I THANK YOU Barb for supporting this website and making it possible for me to continue my work.
BIG HUGS !
I just love this pattern and can hardly wait to get started. Will make such nice Christmas gifts. And, I do enjoy your videos and I think you do a very good job teaching and you are very clear and always seem to offer extra little tips for us to use. Thanks so much!
Thank YOU Paulette !
Thank you for the tutorial .. I also need visual to learn..Is it possible to make a thumb for these fingerless gloves and will you please figure one out..My granddaughter wants a thumb on hers. Love all your tutorials and thank you so much. Luana
I wanted to make this project as easy as possible – but Tuteate does have a video for fingerless gloves with a thumb, so does Scarlett Royal and Amanda Pratt
Hope that helps some
