Loom Knit Brioche Paper Bag Hat

I saw a video a few years ago by Maria Eugenia Tovar for the Brioche stitch in two colors. Wow what a beautiful stitch. I knew I wanted to design a Brioche Paper Bag Hat for a baby because I was certain it would be super cute. I did and I love it. This little beanie works great for girls and boys.

Although a bit difficult for a beginner I’ve recorded a video tutorial to make the pattern doable for anyone wanting to try it. PLEASE be sure to watch the video completely before starting your project. I promise that it will make this awesome stitch so much easier to do.

 

The Pattern for the Brioche Stitch

 

This stitch is pretty basic, but can be confusing until you get used to it. Basically you knit 1 peg – skip 1 peg, yarn-over ( do not use the e-Wrap). On the next row you will purl the pegs you skipped and skip the peg you purled. It’s that simple.

After you Cast-on:

Row 1: Knit 1, Skip 1, Yarn-over ( Do NOT Use the e-Wrap)
Row 2: Skip 1, Yarn-over, Purl 2 Together
Row 3: Knit 2 Together, Skip 1, Yarn-over
Row 4: Skip 1, Yarn-over, Purl 2 Together

Repeat: Rows 3 and 4 for the desired length

Let’s start the hat pattern.

Supplies:

Loom: Small Loom. I used the 1/2 gauge CindiWood 36-peg Baby Loom
Hook: Loom Hook and a Crochet Hook
Yarn: 120 yards of Worsted weight #4. I used Caron Simply Soft in Blue Mint and Grape

 

Cast-on:
I’m using the U-wrap because I want to tighten my stitches at the end.
A good alternative is the Chain Cast-on.

Brim:
Row 1: Knit 1, Purl 1

 

Hat:
Note: Do not e-Wrap your Yarn-overs
Row 2: Knit 1, Skip 1, Yarn-over until the last, then Skip 1 Yarn-over
Row 3: Skip 1, Yarn-over, Purl 2 together
Row 4: Knit 2 together, Skip 1, Yarn-over until the last, then Skip 1 Yarn-over
Row 5: Skip 1, Yarn-over, Purl 2 together

 

NOW ADD THE SECOND COLOR
Make a slip knot with the next color. Place it on peg 1.

 

Row 6 – 65: Repeat Rows 4 and 5

Knit off all the pegs with 2 loops

Row 66: e-Wrap Knit

 

Cast-off:

Modified Basic Bind-off

 

Finish Nicely: Optional

Weave-in your ends
Tighten Loose Loops
Block your little hat
Weave-in a string for a bow
