Spiral Hat on a Circular Loom
The spiral hat is super easy to do. Never-the-less, because beginners are always on my mind I have a written pattern and a step by step video tutorial. Even if you have made a spiral hat in the past take a quick look at the video. It’s under 9 minutes and you might learn something, like a cool trick I learned from Karen Aiken.
More importantly, this is a great project for gift giving. You can start and finish the hat effortlessly in just a few hours. Share your pictures !
Pattern notes:
You will be using 2 versions of the knit stitch. The U-wrap on the brim and the e-Wrap on the hat. This helps with the shaping. There is a video to help you with both stitches: Click HERE
The pattern is a 5 stitch pattern so any loom that will lend itself to a 5 stitch repeat with an extra peg at the end will work well.

Supplies
Round Loom: Extra Large – Used the 41-peg Darice Loom
Loom Hook: Any Hook. I used the Knifty Knitter hook
Yarn: 197 Yards of #4 Worsted weight. Knit with 2 strands as 1.

Cast-on:
Wrap every peg then U-wrap knit every peg.
Brim:
Rows 1- 18: Knit 3 (U-wrap) , Purl 2 to the last peg then Purl 1. Fold the brim.

Hat:
Rows 19 : Knit 3 (e-Wrap), Purl 2 until you reach the last peg. DO NOT knit the last peg YET. First knit off all your e-Wrap knit stitch. Then start the pattern for the next row with the peg you did not knit.
NOTE: Every time you start a new row the Starting peg with shift one spot down.
Repeat row 19 until you reach your desired length. I did 45 rows.

I love the stitch but have a problem with it. My loom is 42 pegs.. Is it possible to make that hat on my loom?
Hi Agniezka, sorry that I missed this comment and I’m responding so late – Yes you can use the 42 pegs – look on the page for the pattern version for the 40-peg loom (it’s an even number of pegs) it will work for your loom.

Hi Connie – soooooooo sorry for the delayed response – yes you can make a matching cowl with the same pattern using the same loom. I would use the super stretchy bind-off to cast off.

Hi Nancy, your loom is an even numbered loom – just scroll down to the middle of the page and you will see a variation of the of the pattern. It was made for a 40-peg loom but applies to any even numbered loom. Hope that helps 🙂 … and THANK YOU for being so sweet … Hugs !

Now about your purple loom – it’s an even number of pegs so just scroll down to the 40-peg loom instruction and it will be the same for your loom. Hope that helps. Let me know if you need more info.

Love this hat! I’m making my first right now and I have a few questions. I’m using a #5 yarn because it matches the scarf I made. How many rows do I need to add for each part of the hat? Would it be possible to measure the brim and body of your hat and last three measurements so I can adjust it that way? Thanks again for your awesome tutorials!

Hi Tiffany, oh Wow I missed this question – I have some comments I had to hold on to and yours got mixed in there -so sorry. Not sure if you still need an answer but – you don’t need to make any changes to the pattern. Just use single strand – the 2 #4 just about equal 1 of your #5.
Thanks Denise, I made a couple of hats with the #5 and they look great! Is there any way to translate this pattern into a flat panel for a scarf? Obviously you couldn’t do spirals, but to get the stripes on a flat panel? Thanks so much!

denise, The first spiral pattern i saw had no brim. Can I ewrap ,uwrap and start main I very much enjoy all the info you provide. Were you aware that Renee VanHoy now has a second amazing stitch dictionary?
Betty – not sure which first pattern of the spiral hat you mean – this is the only one I have. You can sub any brim for the one in this pattern – the start the spiral – it will work fine.
All I have is a thick wool yarn could that be used for this or no?

Denise, I would like to do this on tthe adjustable hat loom from KB but the sizes are with even numbers of pegs, I could either do 40 or 42. What would I need to change for the brim and the hat pattern?
Andrea – the brim does not need to change at all. I haven’t tried this pattern on a 40 but Lisa Werner Houser from out Facebook page has and this is what she suggest: For the brim, 3 knits/2 purls comes out evenly. For the spiral, 3 knits, 2 purls until the LAST one which was 3 knits 1 purl. Turned out great. To see her hat Click HERE

Love this hat, the pattern is great – only problem I have had was that I was following the written steps, and once I had done the 18 rows in rib I started straight away with the pattern, it wasn’t till I was over 30 rows in I realised the brim was meant to be folded and knitted in.
think it was because I was just reading the steps!
Will try to fold and stitch/crochet inside when finished, but I will remember fr the next one

I’m working on making one of these spiral hats. On the brim of the hat, one of my purl stitches came off the peg. I pulled a loop back on, but I know it’s not right as I have a loose strand of yarn that crosses over this peg without being woven in like the rest. I don’t know how to fix it.
Hey Stefanie – with a needle and the yarn used for the hat you can “sew” the stitch back into place.

I loved the way this hat turned out above the brim … but on my brim the knits were pretty tight and then it kinda has a flower look to it instead of a just a circle … (UUUU ) with the purls being lower than the knits… Do you know how i did this ?

I did figure it out so you can void my last question. I found that leaving the ewaps on helped better than stitch marker. I left them on until I got to them in my next round. Thanks so much! I have learned alot from you!
If using a even peg count how do you change the pattern to spiral?

Yes you can Here are 2 options: 1. Drawstring Bind-off 2. Decreased Crown

This is my favorite loom knitting site on the web. You’re fantastic! I saw that you did 45 rows on this one. I’m fairly new to this and my question is: Did your hat come out slouchy or fitted? I can’t tell from the pic. and for some reason I can never tell when I need to stop (too short or too long). I too have ADD and need to write down every row. I don’t like them too slouchy.

Hi Denise, my is looking kind of “funky” and I think I know what I did wrong…..do you think it will make a difference if I knit as I go rather than wait and go back through to knit? I am going to start over and see if that helps 🙂
Sure – I have to do the other way because of my ADD – but if you think a different method will work best – go for it. Doing before or after has no effect on the pattern. Let me know if you have any other questions. 🙂

You can just change the pattern to knit 4, purl 3

I have a question about a knitting stitch. I don’t know who else might know. I only loom knit as I learned it from you but i did see a hat done on needles an it said T4BP. How would that be obtained on a loom. Please can you help. I made your easy hat you did in red an yellow for everyone in my family in there color they liked for a Christmas gift. They all loved them. Thank you so much for your great video’s. I also made my sister the boot cuff you made and she loved them also when I told her I made them myself.
