Loom Knit Hat Has Holes

Hat has holes

Does Your Loom Knit Hat Have Holes?

Sherri from our Facebook page asked why her loom knit hat has holes. This is a common question so I figured it would be best to answer it for all who have the same question but have not asked.

Hat has holes

Here is One solution….

Well, lets start with the problem first.

Hat has holes

Almost everyone who learns how to loom knit starts with the eWrap knit stitch. That version is large and loose so every time the knitting is increased by a row the stitch is stretched and leaves a gap in the hat.

This doesn’t happen for everyone but if it does for you …

One Solution is:

Add a Uwrap knit stitch every other row

Hat has holes

Note that we all knit differently and this may not work for you. But try it and let me know.

Thank you Sherri for being so cool about allowing me to use your question and your pictures. Big Hugs to You !

Hi Denise its me again! I had this loose gap holes problem for my first hat as well, after using 1 row e wrap + 1 row u wrap when loom knitting, problem solved, the hat turned out perfectly. But now I have a confusion, is e wrap + u wrap one row, or two rows? when I knit a hat for 30 rows, would it be consist of 15 e wrap rows + 15 u wrap rows, or 30 rows for each? ! as the pattern looks differenly from using e wrap only. Many thanks! xxx

When I do e-wrap, my starting peg changes ever time I go around. The starting yarn seems to “move” to. The next peg. Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong?

    • Denise Canela January 24, 2016 at 12:14 am

Not normal – you keep changing your starting peg. Use the anchor peg to help you stay on track. The peg to the immediate right should be your first peg. Are you using the eWrap knit stitch?

I think I know what’s going on. (assuming you wrap clockwise and use the e-wrap) you have to wrap on the peg on the left of the peg that the working yarn is on after each row. I used to make the same mistake but once i started wrapping on the peg on the left of the peg that the working yarn was on, I’ve never gotten this problem again. Hope this helps.

This helped me alot, however, I have another issue in making my loom knit hats – I get a diagonal line down the hat, not sure what it is from. I have made three hats this week and all three have this issue. Not sure what I am doing wrong:(

Hi Vera – sorry for the delay in responding… I will assume that you’re using the eWrap. You will need to pull on the first few stitches every time you increase a row – there is a scarf video that will show you what I mean: Click HERE .. For the ones already done – you can wet block them. Do a YouTube search for wet blocking knits.

For the thinner yarns, I use two strands of yarn for each stitch. Normally, I try to get a yarn that has a thicker texture so I don’t have to do this, but sometimes there’s a color or a really great sale and I get the thinner texture.

Before I ask a question, i want to thank you for giving the best visual aid videos. I am new to looming and learn by watching…you are awesome. Now my question…I am starting early to knit hats for the shoeboxes our church sends each year to Good Samaritan. My question is what is the best size to make or are there several different sizes needed. I have made a few already using the red KK, but thought I’d better find out what is needed before I proceed.
    Thanks and happy looming.

Marie – you are good for my heart Sister. LOVE LOVE LOVE Operation Christmas Child. This project is very dear to me.

Best loom to use is the 36-peg loom. I call it the everybody loom. The hat made with this loom will fit the 5-9 and the 10-14. I will tell you that I was a community liason for them for several years. The MOST needed are shoe boxes for boys 10-14. Please let me know if you have any questions – keep me up to date and if possible I would soooooooo love to see pictures.

When you say the 36 peg fits most, is this without a doubled over brim? Are these all loose stitched hats? I made my 5 yr old a two strand worsted weight and did the basket weave pattern and now that he’s a year older it’s too small.

        • Denise Canela January 27, 2016 at 10:47 pm

Hi Marney – sorry for the delay in responding… Yes I meant with the eWrap. I should have been more specific. Size has a lot to do with stitch and design. Here is a good example of what I mean: Click HERE

i think you mean “use the uwrap” on just the first stitch. every other row. not the whole row ?

Thank you so much! Another excellent tutorial…you help me with my loom knitting so much. Thank you again and have a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2016.

    Thanks Denise,
You are the best teacher on the net! I had that problem with my single strand hats, but not with my double strand hats. Now when I make the summer beanies for men I won’t have that problem.
    Sincerely, Danny

      You are VERY welcome 🙂

  11. Deb December 27, 2015 at 12:18 am

do you mean a row of U wrap every other row or just to put a U wrap at the start of the row?

    • Denise Canela December 27, 2015 at 4:42 pm

Hi Deb – just put a Uwrap at the start of the row.

  12. Mel December 26, 2015 at 10:54 pm

If the pattern is an all ewrap hat, you would do row1 ewrap, row 2 uknit? Or is it only on the end of each row, last stitch unwrap? Just double checking 🙂

    • Denise Canela December 27, 2015 at 4:41 pm

Hi Mel, just that peg where you increase the row. One stitch.
