Let’s Make Hats for Mongolia
Kristy from CinDwood Looms is collecting Hats, Cowls/Scarves sets for needy kids in Mongolia from May1 to September 1. I’m hoping loom knitters will get some warm dark-colored acrylic yarn, their favorite loom and pattern get all worked up and hook those loops til your pooped. OK that was cheesy.
You guys know what I mean. Here is a chance to make something for someone in need. Let’s grab the opportunity with open hands and open hearts.

Should you have any questions you can post them at the bottom. If I can answer – I will and if I can’t then I’ll be sure to get them to her. Her answers will be posted here to helps others that are to shy to ask but have the same questions.
REMEMBER – Although the title says Hats for Mongolia – It should be a set that includes a scarf or a cowl. When shipping I always prefer the cowl. Way easier to make, ship and wear. That’s just a personal opinion.
To make a cowl just take your favorite hat pattern and instead of closing the top – do a Modified Basic Bind-off. Tada ! You have a cowl.
Just a Few Suggestions:
Dark Colors (Hide dirt well)
Strong Yarns (Recipients don’t have washing machines)
Warm tight stitches. (Temperatures can get below 40 degrees)
Make It a Set if You Can ( Hat and Cowl Set or Hat and Scarf Set )

Hi, can I do a simple e-wrap for the hat and cowl? I’m new to loom knitting and this is the only stitch I am comfortable with right now.

I’ve had a problem with my bind off being too tight when using a hat pattern to make a cowl. Cindwood has a great YouTube video for a super stretchy bind – it won’t let me post a link here, just search on YouTube.

Does a cowl you want just go around the neck but not like a scarf therefore using lots less yarn? Forgive me if I sound confused but I am lol. There are lots of different kinds of cowls that I see in my search for what a cowl is.

Yes the cowl will take A LOT less yarn 🙂 . Personally – I like them better
I am looming a scarf now. Never made a cowl before. Do I just loom knit both ends together? I may just do a scarf. How long do you want the scarf? Do you want fringe?

Janet you dont need to knit the ends together – just knit with a round loom , like making a hat but you don’t gather the top instead you do a Bind off
How high should the neck warmers go to fit that age child?
Thanks for asking Justine. As a rule, I usually make the cowl the same height as a regular hat which is 6-8 inches – but will ask Kristy just in case.

You can send just hats. My mom and I love to make cowls, so we can make matching cowls to the hats people send if that is what they are more comfortable with 🙂
Hats are just fine. My mom and I like to make cowls, so any hats that come without a cowl we will find yarn and make some to match.

I recommend using a rib stitch pattern because it works for all sizes – large and small. Like the hat in the picture.. Here is the pattern: Click HERE
