Bamboo Stitch Free Pattern with Video Tutorial
The Bamboo Stitch
This stitch really gave me a kick in the behind to translate from knitting needles to loom. But I’m happy with the results. The Bamboo Stitch is simple yet classy with a lot of versatility. Like many of my other translations it works well for both men and women.
In all honesty I was looking for a stitch to make a boys scarf. Those seem to be rare on the internet. But I’m really looking forward to a slouchy hat with this pattern.

Pattern Notes
Supplies Needed

Loom: Any Loom will Work. I used the KB Adjustable Hat Loom
Loom Hook: Any loom hook will work fine. I like to use my Knifty Knitter with the Rubber Band Grip. But for this project I used the hook that came with the loom.
Yarn: This will depend on your choice of looms. For a small gauge use a medium #4 worsted weight. I used Caron Simply Soft in Chocolate . If you use a large gauge like Knifty Knitter , Boye or Darice use Chunky #5 or #6 or Knit with Two Strands as One.

First of all, I love how this looks! Really want to try it.
My question and concern is around the level of instruction given. I am really new at loom knitting and very excited to try this out. I have had good success so far with the projects I have done so far. However, the instructions are not clear at all for a beginner…what method should I cast on with? Do I do anything different on the first peg? These are very important for beginners.
Since there is no clarity on these types of things I don’t feel comfortable paying for the printable version.
Also, I see some contradictory stuff. It says the full pattern is available on the website under the URL that I am on, but where? Then I see a more that this isn’t the full pattern. Maybe I’m just confused, but I am lost on this site. Sadly I will have to look for a different pattern somewhere else.
If someone can clear this up, that would be great because I want to make a scarf with this pattern.

This is a stitch pattern and not a project pattern. Cast-on, Cast-off, and what you do with the first peg is not contingent on the stitch but instead on the project. Most people will start their blanket very differently from their hat. The way I started this stitch sample may not work for your socks. Rib brims are not started the same as a rolled-up brim.

I would like to do this stitch in a hat and was wondering what you would suggest if the stitches don’t finish evenly. I just put bands on the pegs that are for the single stitches and discovered that I start with 2 knit and end with 2 stitches without a purl in between. Do I do it that way and have that as the back of the hat?
Hi Katherine, sooooo sorry for the delay. Personally I would just put that variation to the back. You would be surprised at how these “issues” are so NOT noticeable.
Thanks Denise. I ended up doing 1 classic knit and 1 purl knit at the end. Turned out pretty good. That’s fine about the delay. Life is hectic.

I started a pair of men’s socks using this stitch today for our trip to Taiwan and now Japan. Not sure a beanie is needed since it will be so warm so I’m making us socks instead. I just liked the Facebook page. Is that where I can share when I’m done?? I still plan on making the sweater using this stitch at a later time. I’m so excited!!

I must say I love this pattern and plan to make some hats and scarves with it. My Partner and I will be going to Taipei and I think this will be a cute pattern to make the hats and scarves I’m looking to make.

Thank you! Finally I understand the wyif. lol My only question is, if it’s with yarn in front, why is the yarn put behind the pegs, wouldn’t that be with yarn in back? I’ve seen so many pretty patterns with that stitch, but I haven’t done them because I didn’t understand what the stitch was. I do now, thanks to you! 🙂

I am new at this and some of the definitions I can’t figure out like WIP’s or WYIF (wrap yarn in front?) I wasn’t sure how to start until I read Denise’s comment. With fingers crossed I am going to give it a try. Wish Denise and her baby all the best. Thanks for the pattern. I have only done the standard knitted hat so this will be interesting.

Denise- You are my favorite loom knitting site. You’re videos are clear and so easy to understand. I am always eager to try one of your stitches. Hi Debbie, I got your email. WOW – thanks for sharing – you do my heart ( that’s never ticks to good ) a lot of good. FIRST, BIG HUGS and CONGRATULATIONS to you and your daughter.. now to your question.
I will do my best to post the actual pattern for the square but in the meantime – The c/o is just an ewrap cast on using the flat stitch and with the edges tightened up after a few rows. 8 rows of the stitch pattern without any slip wyif stitches plus 2 Knits (Flat stitch) and 2 purls on the edges on the left side and 2 Purls and 2 Knits (Flat stitch) on the right. You would end the last rows with the same ones you started.

Thanks so much Denise. I’m working on a crochet afghan for her now since I already had the kit. Next week she has the genetic blood work plus with that they will be able to tell her the gender. It will be great knowing that at only 12 weeks. Once I know the gender I will make another afghan in the right colors. Since its a winter baby I think loom knit or needle knit would be warmer than crochet. While I was watching this video I thought how pretty it would be in blue or pink. Thanks so much.

I just love the videos where you teach new stitches. Not many others do that. This stitch is beautful. Will it tend to curl on a round loom.? Would it curl on a long loom? Which is the best?
