Diagonal Stitch on a Loom

Diagonal Stitch

Diagonal Stitch

This fancy stitch has intrigued me for a while. It is a  Diagonal Stitch that is easy to do with a simple combination of knit and purl. Below are the patterns for the Left and Right for both Flat Panel and Knitting in the Round. Scroll to the bottom for a step by step video tutorial with a lot of great extra information.

I first saw this stitch for needle knitters and it took a bit of work to translate. I do think it worked out pretty good. But to make it work well on a loom there are some Must Haves.

 Pattern Notes and Supplies:

Diagonal Stitch

Diagonal Stitch Reverse Side

The pattern will can take you to task. I had to test this baby 4 times to make it work. When you start you can’t see it. You can get discouraged and think you’re doing it wrong. I walked away from it a few times. When I came back the next day the stitches had “settled in” and I could see that it was going to work out.

To make things worst it will easily blur out if you use the wrong loom or the wrong yarn. I tested all 4 versions of the Knit stitch because even that made a difference.

But hang in there.. it is a beautiful stitch well worth the extra effort.

.

Loom: Small Gauge Loom. I used the KB Adjustable Hat Loom. This pattern DOES NOT show up well on large gauge looms like the Knifty Knitter.

Yarn: Worsted Weight. Something with Sheen helps the detail show up much better. Great example: Caron Simply Soft. I used Red Heart Soft in Teal.

Loom Hook: Any hook. I used the KB Knitting Board Hook

Stitches: Purl and Knit ( U-wrap ) Remember that until you pull on the fabric this knit stitch looks like ladders instead of the recognizable V shape. Remember the most important thing is that you “Stack” these stitches correctly.

Hey Denise, quick question: After completing row 12, do I start all over with row 1 or with row 5?

    Thank you!!

I love your instructional videos – they have been very helpful. I just bought the KB adjustable hat loom and I am puzzled as to how many pegs to use for an adult hat. Please help.

    • Denise Canela December 30, 2015 at 7:55 pm

The number of pegs will depend on the style (beanie vs slouchy) , stitch (drop stitch vs diagonal stitch) and yarn weight (worsted vs chunky) . This loom can be problematic for beginners. What kind of hat did you have in mind – can you give me a link to something similar…

      • Paul F Stokinger December 30, 2015 at 9:22 pm

thank you for responding so quickly Denise. I want to use the Diagonal Stitch in the round using a worsted weight yarn. i also want to try the Diamond Brocade Beanie. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

        • Denise Canela December 30, 2015 at 10:43 pm

Hey Paul – if both are beanies use the medium setting with the highest number of pegs (small gauge setting) …. here is a great video about this loom from Good Knit Kisses: Click HERE

I made some loom knit scarves for gifts years ago. I’m excited to make some great hats, scarves, fingerless gloves & small dog sweaters for gift giving next year.

Do you have a pamphlet or book that could show me various stitch patterns that can be followed? I love your videos, but I am a visual learner. I’ll do better if I watch your video & then have a written pattern to follow.

Thanks so much for caring & sharing !!!

    Chris

Hi Denise I absolutely LOVE your videos and I’m able to follow them so well. I’m new to all looming but just can’t get enough. I’m working on the green round making a flat baby blanket in the double moss stitch. I’m already freaking out about how to cast off…your video only went so far, so hopefully you can post one as I’m not sure I’ll understand it if you tell me…Thank you so much! Your the Best
    Loom on…
    Cindy

Hi Cindy, first thanks for all your kind words. I greatly appreciate it. I have a video for a scarf that could be helpful for the cast-off portion of you blanket for the post link: Click HERE

    Hi there,
I am a new loom, about 2-3 months, have done a couple of 8 pattern scarves, plus e-wrap lap blankets and have even started my 10-stitch blanket. I’m super excited to get to know new stitches and patterns. My next projects will be a poncho, the sea-foam stitch scarf.

    • Denise Canela May 20, 2015 at 5:25 am

      Hi Artemis,
I think you already have the loom bug.. you’re a fearless knitter. The sea-foam stitch is beautiful! Would love to see when you’re finished.
      Big Hugs Loomy,

  6. Monica April 25, 2015 at 10:02 pm

Can this be done on a straight loom? I’ve got the Boye loom, & wanted to do a 12×12 square using this stitch, but your directions are so long

    • Denise Canela April 26, 2015 at 6:00 pm

Hi Monica, there are four patterns outlined here. You would need to follow 1 of the 2 Flat patterns. So choose which way you want the stitch to go.. say you like to the right. Then only follow the 6 line pattern below. As for the 12 inches – you will have to make yourself a small swatch for the exact gauge.

RIGHT Diagonal Stitch – Flat Panel

Multiples of 6 + 2 for both edges

      Row 1 and 3: Purl 4, Knit 2
      Row 2 and 4: Knit 2, Purl 4
      Rows 5 – 8: Purl 2, Knit 2, Purl 2
      Rows 9 and 11: Knit 4, Purl 2
      Rows 10 and 12: Purl 2, Knit 4

Repeat Rows 1 – 12 until you reach the desired length

      • Monica April 27, 2015 at 4:57 pm

Thank you for explaining that Denise!! I was a little confused. I had gotten up to line 6, and stopped to see if you’d reply. I love bloggers who reply to their followers!! 🙂 I’ll be finishing this hopefully this week. I’m doing a 12×12 inch square, because a friend of mine & I are swapping them so we can make a large queen size blanket. She’s crocheting and I’m loom knitting

        • Denise Canela April 27, 2015 at 6:56 pm

That sounds SUPER cool. Would love to see the results… Share some pic when you’re done !

      • Althea May 10, 2015 at 1:42 pm

Hi Denise, I love this pattern, thank you for posting it here for us! can you please tell me the number you cast on for this size here?

        • Denise Canela May 10, 2015 at 8:26 pm

Hi Althea, the number of stitches for your cast-on will depend on your project, your loom and your yarn.

The number that I used for this one particular swatch – I don’t even remember because it’s been a while, sorry.

  7. Theresa Marie April 7, 2015 at 6:43 am

    Dear Denise,

Thank you for your patterns, especially this one. I have a KB knitting loom. I want to make a baby blanket with this stitch, would it work?
Thank you also for the hints on how to tighten the first row, the blanket I just made came out slanted, and the bottom and top edges curled terribly. I was upset. Have any ideas to fix this? Now though, with your video on how to tighten the beginning cast on, the new blanket will hopefully come out flat.
To me, your site is the best, you work well and your explanations are clear.
Thank you for the time you put into this for us beginners.
    God bless you Denise,
    Theresa Marie

Will cotton work up well? I would like to make a rug for my bathroom – and I love this stitch.
Would be using a solid color in peaches and cream.

Thank you so very much for the patterns and the videos!

    • Denise Canela March 28, 2015 at 7:56 pm

Hi Kathy, sorry I haven’t tried this stitch on cotton. I will tell you that it is one of those stitches that will easily fade away on you. However, I would think that it should do well with cotton. Wish I could give you certain answer.

  9. Betty Waldeck March 21, 2015 at 11:37 pm

This stitch is so pretty and you could not have picked a better color can not wait to try a basic hat pattern in this stitch

    • Denise Canela March 23, 2015 at 9:49 am

Betty, just make sure you use a small gauge loom, solid color yarn and is preferably one with sheen. These stitch can easily fade away on you.
Send Pics if you can !
      Hugs,

  10. Helen March 18, 2015 at 7:32 pm

Thank you for all the great videos. I’m using the adjustable hat loom with only one strand and find your videos very helpful.

  11. Donna March 15, 2015 at 11:40 am

Thank you so much! I like this stitch and appreciated the handy tips in the video as well. (: You are wonderful!

    • Denise Canela March 16, 2015 at 7:35 am

Thank you Donna, glad you liked it !

  12. Loretta Urie March 15, 2015 at 6:56 am

im hoping you can direct me to a tighter stich for kids style hat, although I love how easy and pretty it is I’m getting complaints its drafty!!
    Thank you,

    • Denise Canela March 16, 2015 at 8:02 am

Hi Loretta, any stitch can be knit loosely so you just have to remember to knit with 2 strands if your using looms like the Knifty Knitter .. But the e-Wrap is the most loose of the Knit Stitches.. to learn other versions Click HERE .

  13. Connie March 15, 2015 at 3:10 am

Thank you Denise! Your videos are TERRIFIC!!! I truly feel like a friend is teaching me!!! Some projects are still a little (a lot) over my head, but when I get there I want you to be my teacher!!!

    • Denise Canela March 16, 2015 at 7:57 am

Thank you Connie and I would suggest that you just DIVE IN to those projects that seem “over your head” find the ones with videos do them slowly. You’ll be surprised at what you can handle and if it turns our wrong… frog and start again. 🙂
      Hugs,
      denise

  14. D.A. Fox March 15, 2015 at 3:10 am

Trying again… hit post, but it disappeared! Just wanted to thank you for another beautiful stitch! I don’t have this Loom, but I do have the Martha Stewart convertible loom, and I think in the smaller gauge it should work! I am excited to try it! Thanks so much for your hard work in bringing us not only a written pattern, but a video to show us! I really love to see it and have the pattern written as well since it teaches me better how to do a pattern that does not have a video with it. I appreciate all you do.

    • Denise Canela March 16, 2015 at 7:29 am

Thank you D.A. you’re ALWAYS so sweet. You bless me with your comments and I greatly appreciate them.
      Hugs,
