Garter Stitch Checks on a Knitting Loom
I love any version of the basket weave and the Garter Stitch Checks is on the top of that list. What can I say, a few knits and purls has done it again. Super cool – super easy. Great for everybody, men, women and children. It is reversible so works for dishcloths, washcloths , scarves and blankets.
Always there is a pattern below and a short video tutorial.
Pattern: Garter Stitch Checks

Pattern Notes: I don’t like to add the edges on the pattern. I feel they make it difficult for beginners. This pattern has a multiple of 10+5 (to even out the pattern)
Stitches: Purl and Knit- I used the U-wrap version of the knit stitch, you can use the True as an alternative. If you use the e-Wrap you will NOT get the nicely defined look of this pattern. It you use the Flat the knitting will get VERY tight and you’ll have a lot of difficulty. For a post that shows you all 4 versions: Click HERE
The pattern is the same flat or in the round.
Measurements: With a Small Gauge Loom and Worsted Weight Yarn: 6 Stitches and 16 Rows = 1 inch (2.54 centimeters = 1 inch)

Supplies for Swatch and Video
Loom: Any small gauge loom- I used KB Adjustable Hat Loom
Yarn: Worsted weight – I used Bernat Satin Solid
Hook: I used the one that came with the loom but I do suggest the KB Ergonomic Loom Hook

Hi there. I’m trying to make the baby cocoon using a 41 peg loom, how can I divide 2 purls 2 flats? There’s always 1 peg left ,right? Which stitch should I use for this left peg before starting the new row ? Thanks.
Hi Luis – Just repeat the last one you did – just stay consistent and won’t be able to tell.
I am new to loom knitting but love how easy the loom is to use …I taught myself how to do the garter stitch short cut (on a round KK loom) but Unfortunately for some reason when I get to the last peg on the loom I’m not sure if I should knit and purl or just knit or just purl. At any rate I wind up with a hole right in that “last peg” spot. I’ve looked on you tube for help doing garter stitch short cut in the round where this stitch is done start to finish but unable to find one…..can u help me figure out what I’m doing wrong???? Or send a video link that you think may help…. thank for your time……
Stacy on the peg right after that last one – pull a bit on the stitch and that will pull the last one .. to have some idea about what I mean you would need to watch this video: Click HERE

I LOVE how through you are when you teach us looming. I’m new to looming but have been doing Needles most my life. I am a ‘sight learner’ meaning I can’t just read a pattern or hear it, I have to see it being done as it is explained, and you do that beautifully.
I have been looking for a simple basket weave pattern for a baby blanket and this one will do great, my only question is what do you think a favorable cast on method would work best?

Hi Denise! The pattern for the garter stitch basket weave you show a knit row between each row except when the pattern is flipped. I just want to make sure before I start this scarf that is correct. No knit rows when you flip the pattern. Thanks Jo

You are correct, not knit on the flip 🙂 – because to add a row of knit will create another row of garter.
I have never try the garter basket weave stitch. I will try it. I would like to works this stitch on a hat would it work? Would it work on round loom?
Yes – it works just like the regular Basket weave

Hi Sushma – Thanks for the question but Decreasing is not something I suggest to a newbie (more then one method) and deceasing this stitch pattern is not something I can explain in a simple comment. Sorry

Hi I have question when doing a basket weave the easy version. When you get to rows 8-14 the pattern flip does the direction change. I think I am doing it wrong. I have watch the video a couple times.

Veronica – when I say flip – i’m not talking directions – I just mean to say that now where the garter stitch box was, there is a knit stitch box and vice versa.

I have one question I am a beginner what dose 10+5 mean in the basket weave pattern I am trying to do on a round loom
The +5 stitches balances out out the pattern – it’s really just an extra set of the stitch pattern

I love the garter stitch checks pattern. I would like to make this as a scarf. How many stitches would you do for the edges and would you just knit them?
Judy – I don’t really like edges – I tend to prefer to just do 2 knits and then I start my stitch patters.
