Knit and Purl – the Dynamic Duo of Stitches
Knit and Purl is an awesome combination of two simple knit stitches with incredible possibilities. Depending on the order and the number of repetitions this dynamic duo creates some interesting and beautiful patterns. I use many of the combinations in almost all of my knitting projects. But I must admit that up to now my range of combinations has been the 8 stitches in the Stitch Guide by Isela Phelps.
I had no idea of the number of combinations available until I found a listing on Loom Knitting Central. I did a double take when I saw this, I believe there are 110 if not more. What ever the exact number is, I was day dreaming about blankets and hats made with this perpetual list of stitches.
But first lets start with the basics…
The Knit Part of the Combo
There are three ways to knit. All are simple and regardless of your preference they have little effect on the look of the knitting. The difference I would say is in the level of tightness.
I prefer the e-Wrap, which to me is the happy medium.
Mild Variations of the Knit Stitch
1. e-Wrap Knit – complete wrap around the peg twice. Knit the bottom loop over the top loop.
2. Flat Knit – place the working yarn in front of the peg, Knit the bottom loop over the top loop. Note: Can be done like the opposite of the purl stitch.
3. u-Wrap Knit – like an incomplete e-wrap, forming a U with your working yarn. Knit the bottom loop over the top loop.
The Purl Part of the Combo
Although the purl part of the Knit and Purl combination is a bit more difficult once you get it – you got it. The rewards for mastering this stitch are astronomical.
I’m a visual learner so I thought a picture tutorial would be a good idea. If this doesn’t help then scroll down to the video.
The Knit and Purl Video
Next Step to the Knit and Purl – Using it!
Well it’s going to take you and I several years to work our way through the over 100 combinations of knit and purl listed in Loom Knitting Central.
My hat goes out to the person who put this together. I wish I could give you the know.
If you make something with this list, send me a picture so I can share it here on the site.
For now…

Hello. I am trying to do the double moss stitch. Could you tell me how to cast on and do the u wrap. It is prob. something simple, but it is eluding me. Thank you.
Hi Barbara, I have a post with a video of the Double Moss.:Click HERE. Depending on your project you could cast on with an eWrap of Chain .. The Uwrap is just like the eWrap but you half wrap the peg and knit off.
Hope that helps,
denise
Denise, you have a wonderful website and our videos are very helpful. I have only used the basic e-stitch to make loom knitted baby hats and dog sweaters. After exploring your site, I tried the basket weave with a single color. I love it, but would like to use 2 colors. I haven’t figured out how to switch back and forth between colors. Could you give me some advise? Thank you!
You can do a 3 pegs and 3 rows pattern (k3,p3 for 3 rows)- then p3,k3 for 3 rows).. attach both colors of yarn to your anchor peg, pick up and drop color as needed. Not a good project for beginners – you would have to know how to clean up the inside of the hat and for that I would need to show you instead of tell you…If you try it – let me know how it goes
I feel so lucky to find this!! The purl has eluded me for a year! for some reason I couldn’t figure it out with the books I have, seeing it in this very clear video made it so easy!! I’m embarrassed it took me this long to get it down after you made it so easy! Thank you!!
WOW that was the easiest knit and purl lesson I have ever seen! Thanks
I would like to learn more on knit and purl I am just. Starting to do a lot more but sometime I get mix up I am teaching my self to knit and purl I have a hard time sometime.
I LOVE your site. I have learned so much from you. I tried the mii ie mouse hat and have three done. I used the same pattern and made panda hats. I donate these to a hospital and they love the hats. I want to branch out from hats. I got an infinity loom and looking for simple patterns to use for the infinity loom. Any suggestions????? Thanks for this site. I ha you book marked everywhere!
Hi Annie, Thanks for ALL the kind words. I appreciate them and You. About the infinity loom, I have not used it but it’s designed basically for blankets and such so the question is more about the stitches then the projects. Do a quick Google image search with the words infinity loom patterns and see what Googles kicks back. You would be surprised at what Google can offer.
Hope that helps some,
denise
