Linen Stitch on a Knitting Loom

The Linen Stitch on a Knitting Loom

Linen Stitch

The Linen Stitch

I have a new obsession this week and its called the Linen Stitch. It has a very upscale and classy look. To top things off it is VERY easy to do. Below is a picture, text and video tutorial to help you with a pattern that only requires two steps.

This chance encounter began as I was looking for new stitches for my 50 New Stitches by 2016 Challenge that I plan to start soon. If you don’t know anything about me – know this – I am a stitch hog. In my quest I bumped into this beauty and fell in love. I especially like the fact that it works for both men and women’s wear. Some stitches are just not that versatile. It also has a nice texture that would work well on a dishcloth or wash cloth. Below the stitch pattern is a pattern for an 8×8 square.  Well, without further ado ….

The Pattern for the Linen Stitch

Linen Stitch Lost in translation ? No .. this stitch was perfectly translated from the traditional needle knit pattern to the loom by Lisa Clarke  for her Luxurious Loom Knit Neck Warmer. THANK YOU Lisa ! That said, I did make one small change in that I use a different version of the knit stitch. I did this because I used a lighter weight of yarn and I wanted the bumping part to show up more.

She uses the small 24-peg large gauge Knifty Knitter loom and chunky yarn . As you can see, it looks great. Nice rich red tone. I feel warmer already. But alas, its January and 76 degrees here in Florida…. so no chunky yarn for me.

For my giant 8×8 square swatch I decided to use the Authentic Knitting Board’s Adjustable Hat Loom in the small 1/2 inch gauge setting and Vickie Howell’s Sheepish yarn in the  Chartreuse-ish color. It is a worsted weight yarn. Love this yarn !

If you want to knit a square like mine for an afghan or blanket the pattern for it is below the Linen Stitch Pattern .

THE BASIC PATTERN

To Purchase a Printable PDF: Click HERE
Row 1: Knit 1, Slip 1 wyif  repeat
Row 2: Knit
Row 3: Slip 1 wyif, Knit 1 repeat
Row 4: Knit

You are just flipping Row 1 and Row 3 and putting a row of knit stitches in between the 2 rows.

Notes – My Change to the Pattern: Unlike Lisa who uses a Flat Knit Stitch I used the e-Wrap Knit Stitch through-out the pattern, only because I found that with the worsted weight yarn the stitch looked bolder, the knitting went faster and with less tension

See the video tutorial at the bottom of the post

Pattern for an 8×8 Afghan / Blanket Square

Loom-a-squareNotes: Just one thing to keep in mind ; I am making it for a blanket so it has no pretty border. e-Warp stitch throughout the pattern. Slip the stitches on the edges.

Loom:  1/2 inch gauge loom. I used the Authentic Knitting Board’s Adjustable Hat Loom

Stitches: Knit (e-Wrap), Slip 1 with yarn in front

Gauge: 4 Stitches and 5 Rows = 1 inch (Approximately)

Cast-on : e-Wrap cast-on 32 pegs

Row 1:  Knit

Row 2: K1, *Knit 1, slip 1 wyif  repeat from * to last 2 then K2

Row 3: Knit

Row 4. K2, *Slip 1 wyif, Knit 1  repeat from * to last then K1

Row 5: Knit

Repeat Rows 2 – 5 until you reach 8 inches. My square took 45 Rows to complete.

Bind-off: Basic Bind-off

To correct rolling edges tighten Loose Loops  and  Block your square.

    Hello! I’m a bit confused . Row 2 and 4 are the same. Row 2….K1 *k1 slip wyif knit*. Row 4. K2 * slip wyif k1*

What am I missing? Am I making this more complicate then it is? I am making a flat panel .

Love the video just wished it started at the beginning of rows. I guess that’s how my brain works.

Thanks for teaching me how to loom knit!

    Melinda

The written pattern includes the beginning – the video is only for the stitch. This post may be helpful: Click HERE

Im a bit confused on this one. I am making an 8×8 square. My question is should I knit or slip the first and last pegs, the edges?

    Thanks!!

    • Denise Canela February 9, 2016 at 10:34 pm

You only slip the first peg when you turn

  6. Susan Kelly January 12, 2016 at 7:08 am

    Hi Denise,
I would like to know if I can use this stitch to make a hat? I’m using the KB Adjustable Hat Loom with 68 pegs.
I’ve noticed the pattern for a square asks for 32 pegs which isn’t divisible with the peg count I’m using. I’m hoping it would work as being divisible by 2, then I’d have no worries.

Blessings to you Denise, you are awesome! I love your YouTube channel,
    Cheers

    • Denise Canela January 12, 2016 at 8:35 pm

Susan, the 32 peg count was because I wanted an 8 inch square – I make it work by the design of the edges – you have no edges for a hat. All you have to do is repeat the pattern in a circle. Only follow the basic stitch pattern – not the pattern for the square.

      Hope that makes sense

      • Susan Kelly January 14, 2016 at 6:15 am

        Thanks Denise,
I wasn’t sure you would be able to reply so promptly! I know you have new responsibilities so thought you may be quite busy! Once again, thank you and God bless 🙂

          You’re VERY welcome !

  7. Debbie R October 3, 2015 at 4:37 pm

Hi, I love this stitch and was thinking of making a scarf. What type of cast on and cast off do you recommend? How many stitches (for width) on the KB hat loom would you recommend? Thanks for all of your efforts. Your site is so helpful!!

    • Denise Canela October 17, 2015 at 11:19 am

He Debbie, sorry about the delay – thought I had answered this comment – I used the KB hat loom for this stitch . I like the 8 inch width on scarves – so 32 pegs and I would use the modified cast-off : Click HERE

        Thank you so much!!

  8. Alma serenio July 25, 2015 at 4:03 pm

I am new in this crafty beautiful stuff but I want to learn more, thank you for posting this video it’s easy to follow, I have a question , how to cast off or finish it the linen stich pattern, thanks and God bless you always…..

    • Denise Canela July 25, 2015 at 8:11 pm

Alma , this is only a stitch pattern and not a project. Cast-on and Bind-off’s depend on the project. For example a hat and a blanket do not share the same bind-off. What are you wanting to make?

  9. Belinda Jones April 17, 2015 at 10:44 am

The only loom i have is the Boye Loom. These stitches you do on other looms that are spaced closer together, will they work on my wider boye loom. Also I had asked about an ear warmer. I found a beautiful one. IT’s called a turban. I’m sure you’ve seen it. It criss crosses in the front. So super cute!

    • Denise Canela April 17, 2015 at 1:44 pm

Hi Belinda – this particular stitch works fine with your loom. Stitch patterns just show up with higher detail when a small gauge loom is used but in some cases it’s not vital.

I have seen the earwarmer … what is your question about it?

  10. David March 15, 2015 at 7:15 pm

I love your videos.do u have a website that shows tour patters.im very interested in the linen stitch but since u have already got some of it done what was your cast on to start.thanks

    • Denise Canela March 16, 2015 at 7:32 am

Hi David, I do an easy e-Wrap cast-on but you will need to tighten the edges when you’re done. Click on the words for links to post with video tutorials.
      Hope that helps,
      denise

Hi I was wondering is this the same pattern that is for sale on ebay?

    • Denise Canela February 19, 2015 at 7:37 am

Yes… but all my patterns are FREE here on the website. You just don’t have a printable PDF version.

      • julia smith February 19, 2015 at 7:39 am

Thanks I was wondering when I saw it what the difference was.

  13. Vij February 9, 2015 at 2:01 pm

I really love your patterns. I will have to use them in regular knitting tho. I loved working with the looms but to much frustation… my knifty knitting looms I figured out are incorrectly spaced. my extra large yellow ( 41 peg) doesnt even work for teen/adult hat. the green one only has 31 pegs. I had tried different techniques but they just don’t wrk- even went to a wedsite & tried learning to add extra loops ( double Loops which are worked seperatly.

    )

    • Denise Canela February 16, 2015 at 7:04 pm

Hi Vij, the Knifty Knitters are GREAT looms – the are large gauge but that’s not always a bad thing.. as far as the yellow loom you can make very nice slouchys for teens and adults with that one and they will work very well – you need to make sure you start with a rib stitch. It also works for shawls and blankets.

I’ve enjoyed making a lot of things… everything I’ve made mostly gets donated to hospitals, cancer patients, animal hospitals. I’ve made preemie blankets, preemie hats, newborn hats and booties and tube socks, mens, womens, and youth hats, critter blankets for 2 vet hospitals for the animals, scarf, hats and fingerless gloves for the homeless… everything is donated… So my thanks to you for the videos and the new stitches and hints… please keep them coming as I enjoy them very much.
