Loom Knit Stitch StitchesStitches for the Loom Hat Patterns

It is difficult to follow the loom hat patterns if you don’t know the required stitches. YouTube is a great source for stitches. Visit the site and put the name of the stitch in the search bar. I personally don’t do well with patterns – they have to be simple with few instruction. I rely heavily on YouTube because I prefer to “See” instructions instead of “Reading” them.

Of course there is always Google. The Google Image Search is great. Don’t shy away from the other’s like Bing and Ask.

Denise, do you have loom pattern for making the ponytail (or messy bun) hats?

    • Denise Canela December 15, 2016 at 9:41 pm

Hoping to have one soon – working the pattern – but i do plan to show an easy technique to turn ANY hat pattern into a messy bun hat this weekend

  2. JoAn October 17, 2016 at 7:58 pm

Hi Denise, I started looming last year and don’t think I would have attempted if I hadn’t had found your website. I made several hats for my Granddaughter, now she’s getting specific on what she wants me to make. She wants a hat with ear flaps and neck/mouth warmer, somewhat like the olive hat on your site. Do you have a video…I do better with videos. Thank you.

    • Denise Canela October 17, 2016 at 11:35 pm

Hi JoAn – Thanks for the questions. That hat is not my pattern. I do plan to design one like it but it may not be for several months.

  3. GAY K MCCAULEY October 4, 2016 at 9:04 pm

Hello hi I’m making mermaid tails and I’m trying to figure out on the rectangle loom how to taper down to do the tail I’m not using the regular stitches back and forth back and forth but I’m wrapping them around as in going each side as opposed to the back and forth back and forth does anybody know how you taper to go down and then down and then down I don’t know how to taper thank you have a good day and God bless any help is welcome I’m kind of stuck here and their Christmas presents

  4. Sam September 28, 2016 at 12:33 pm

I just was wondering if you could tell me what number of pegs I would use to make a 3 year old slippers or socks

  5. Ann August 27, 2016 at 4:46 pm

Cannot thank all involved in this project enough. Your love for looming and your willingness to share means so much to those of us cannot create a pattern but can follow those who can. From the bottom of my heart, thank you again.

    • Denise Canela August 28, 2016 at 9:55 pm

Thank you Ann for the kind words – so glad this collection of patterns is helpful to you. πŸ™‚

  6. Beverly Locklear June 16, 2016 at 9:21 am

I found this page today am trying to get started loom knitting. My questions are (1) how many different looms do I need? Some say any round loom, 36 peg 46 peg loom, flower loom or Martha Stewart loom. I am confused, can’t one loom suffice for all the products? Also I found an S loom do they come in different sizes for different size afghans, or sweaters. After writing all this down I think I need a class for learning all about the looms & what each one is capable of doing. Is there one available? TIA. Be Blessed.

    • Denise Canela June 17, 2016 at 12:28 am

Beverly, Just like one set of needles don’t work for all pattern and most mechanics need a set of wrenches – you can not buy one loom for all your projects. I would suggest the set of 4 round Knifty Knitters as a starter: Click HERE for more info

  7. Barb Rigdon February 26, 2016 at 9:33 pm

Hi Denise, do you have a pattern for your doll dress? Thanks, Barb

    • Denise Canela April 8, 2016 at 9:23 am

Barb – so sorry for the delay in responding – been sick and didn’t notice that I had 2 pages of comments. Here is the link – let me know if you want me to add a downloadable version to Patreon: Click HERE

  8. R-M February 9, 2016 at 8:49 pm

The link for the darling little blue newsboy style hat is broken. But it is available at The Loom Muse site for Oct 7 or so, 2013. the pattern can be used for doll up to large adult sizes.

  9. R-M February 9, 2016 at 8:44 pm

I don’t know if anyone else commented, but the link to that darling baby hat (blue, newsboy style) is broken. I found the pattern on another site. The pattern is for doll size to adult:
At the loom muse pattern site for Monday, Oct 7, 2013.

  10. Pamela Blackshaw February 2, 2016 at 2:24 am

Thank you for all of you taking the time and showing such generosity…I’m new to loom knitting and find its very calming for me…I look forward to trying these beautiful creations …even though I will probably be very slow ?

  11. Justina Conley December 30, 2015 at 8:04 am

Hi Denise! Thanks so much for your time in responding to questions! I have had lots of my questions answered by reading through your answers ? a couple of more I had that I didn’t see here are : 1) when the pattern calls for casting on 60 sts does that mean 60 straight down one side or 30 on each side to make 60 sts? 2) why does a pattern call for you to work counter-clockwise and does it matter? 3) I also am confused when the patter wants me to increase a stitch in the middle of a row? For example: for row 9 it’s asking me to K3, M1L & repeat to end of round to make 80 sts – it makes more sense to me to increase sts at the end of the rows. But I am new to loom knitting so any advise you can give will be much appreciated!! Thanks and Happy New Year!

    • Denise Canela December 30, 2015 at 7:50 pm

Okay so for question 1) the cast on in how you mount (add) the yarn to the loom. If you are asked to cast-on 60 stitches – that means you need to add yarn to 60 pegs…. 2) the direction in some cases matter and in some it doesn’t – if a pattern calls for a particular direction – in that pattern it matters. 3) Yes – the M1L makes sense anywhere in the pattern where the designer felt it needed for the pattern – this step is quite advanced and I would just leave patterns with the Make 1 (M1) until you’ve done more simple patterns.

Hi Charli – I will check on that

  13. Bobbie Brannon October 25, 2015 at 3:10 pm

Thank you so much for all you do. I was putting off any looming. You have made it so easy to do. I have learned so much from you.

    • Denise Canela October 25, 2015 at 5:48 pm

Thank You for the Thank You Bobbie – Very much appreciated !

  14. Arthur Barton September 23, 2015 at 11:05 am

I discovered your web site because I was really unhappy with the instructions that came with the loom I bought. Seeing someone show the way was what I needed. Now I’m hooked!

Thank you for the great videos and off course the patterns. There will be plenty of things for me to try out there.

  16. Tammy March 31, 2015 at 4:05 pm

Hi Denise, i just want to say i love your website. i am new at looming and i have learned all i know from your site. I’ve been doing this for about 4 months now and made countless number of hats and scarves and would love to move on. i would love it if you could post videos of loom knitted sweaters or tank tops. also where am i able to find the adhesive tape ? i checked every here where i live and with no luck. once again i just want to say thanks for the videos and patterns.

    • Tammy April 2, 2015 at 3:03 pm

sorry Denise, i also had another couple of questions i forgot to ask. first what does “working in the round mean” ? and are you going to do any videos with long looms?? once again i love your site and all the information you can get on here.

      • Denise Canela April 3, 2015 at 7:15 am

Hi Tammy, working in the round in loom knitting just meaning that the project is not Flat so you are always knitting the whole round loom like a hat – you will not be going back and forth like a dish cloth.

    • Denise Canela April 3, 2015 at 7:13 am

Hi Tammy, I don’t have any video with sweater yet but there are some online already. In fact here is a Vlogger with a few loom knit sweater videos: Click HERE
As far as the adhesive tape .. where did you see that on this website ? I don’t use tape to mark my looms – I use tiny rubber bands. I have seen the tape and it usually painters tape – because that one doesn’t adhere to strongly to the plastic so when it comes off it does so cleanly.
      Hope that helps,
      denise

  17. Dennis March 29, 2015 at 1:50 am

In the last few months I have been dealing with losing my eye. It has been a cause for many dark days but my wife suggested I pick up a hobby. Looking on line a your name and videos are every where which is great. I would like to send a THANKS’ you never know how you’re work can help someone. Now I have some questions.
    1. I have a Boye loom is there any changes that need to be made for another brand of loom .

2.there is a pattern for a hat. The one that is black white and brown. If I use a 36 peg loom and divide each color skein into to work 2 strands of yard. Mow many hats could I make? Give or take.

    • Denise Canela April 2, 2015 at 6:55 am

Dennis, first sorry for my delay in response. Stuff comes at you and you get caught up in the dodging game. Thanks for the thanks – sometimes folks have no idea how much that means to me. I greatly appreciate it.

      Now to your questions..

      1. The Boye is VERY similar to all the plastic mass produced large gauge ( approx 1 inch between pegs ) looms. So any pattern made with the Knifty Knitter, Loops and Threads (Michael’s) and Darice . You don’t need to make any changes to those patterns. I will say this about the Boye – I wasn’t happy with this loom and never recommend them for beginners. Here is a post: Click HERE . If you don’t have the same issues I did – great. But my concern is when this is your first loom – you experience the same issue and believe that all looms are manufactured the same.

      2. The question about the yarn. All skeins are not created equal. Some can have 50 yards of yarn and others like the Red Heart Jumbo that has as much as 744 yards. So its hard to answer this question. What I will tell you is that it takes about 100 – 120 yards to make a hat.

  18. marnie katzbeck February 7, 2015 at 8:30 am

what type of yarn do you use I have been using Red Heart super saver hope that is alright I make them for adults and kids/tweens.

    • Denise Canela February 7, 2015 at 9:59 am

Wo Marnie I use LOTS of differant Brands, Weights, Fibers, Textures…. but when I test a pattern I use the Red Heart Super Saver. If I had to tell you my favorite then I would have to say that it’s Paton’s … any variety of the brand – I LOVE. It’s inexpensive with a high-end look. I also like Sheepish by Vikie Howell. It can be hard to work with and I don’t recommend it for beginners.

    Hi Denise,

I just bought my first loom set. I just finished watching you video. I’ve probably missed it somewhere on your site. If I would like to change colors (say 10 rows of multi-colored yarn / 10 rows of another) how would I go about doing that? Thank you for your time.

    Denise,
Thanks for the Loom A Hat site. I’m a newbie at this and have done a lot of searching on the web and continuesly come back to your site. In looking through this list of free patterns I thought it would be helpful if you could ” Rate” the patterns. Thanks so much for all your help.

    • Denise Canela February 28, 2014 at 8:42 am

Hi Melanie – Thanks for the Thanks and for the recommendation – that’s a great idea ! πŸ™‚ I had thought about a Pattern Review.

    • Anonymous March 7, 2014 at 11:17 am

      Denise,
I’m having an issue with closing my hats. I’ve been using the ” Gathered Removal” technique and my hats are drawing up especially if it’s stretchy yarn. ( not so much with the worsted)
Should I be using the ” Chain one bind off” method ? Thanks for your help.
      Melanie

      • Denise Canela March 12, 2014 at 9:31 pm

Hi Melanie, I would not recommend using the Chain on bind off on a hat. Try this – Click HERE

  37. Greata Lewis July 23, 2013 at 9:12 am

Wonderful selection of loom hats…But i am battling to print the patterns…Please help….Many thanks…..I cant wait to get home to make one….xxxx

    • Denise Cenela July 23, 2013 at 7:00 pm

Hi Greata, the patterns are made by different designers. Folks use different methods. Some can be downloaded – others can not. If you don’t have the option to download – print the page. If you have some trouble with printing the screen – look for the patterns that allow download. Wish I could help more.
