Loom Knitting with Slub Yarn

Loom Knitting with Slub YarnSlub Yarn

I would have never imagined that Slub would bring me joy. The word looks to much like slob. Which has me thinking gray and not yellows and greens.  But slub yarn is really beautiful and finding a technique that allowed me to use this pretty yarn in the only way I know how to turn knots into hats did make me very happy. So let me tell you in 300 words or less what I learned so that you to can find joy in a ball of slub.

By the Way, Slub Yarn is also known as: Thick and Thin, Novelty and Art Yarn.

About the Yarn and the Loom

Slub YarnThis yarn actually started out as a mistake that new spinners would make.  Finding fuller nubby sections in the fibers was not on purpose. When it did happen , those parts would be discarded. Somewhere along the line and I can’t tell you when because I didn’t do enough research, someone decided this looked pretty good and they wanted to keep it. So was born this crude but ever so interesting slub yarn.

Now, that the short history lesson is ever. All this information on this loom Slub Yarn knitting website begs the question, what does a loom knitter do with a yarn that goes from Sport to Chunky in 3 inches of fiber? You can’t switch back and forth on gauge.

Well, that was the question I asked me and me said, you find a yarn that is worsted weight and knit with two strands as one through out the project. I did as I said and the results were fabulous. Vickie Howell’s line of Sheepish yarn played along nicely with my slub yarn. Which by the way I find the slub in one of those big bins filled with unlabeled yarn in my local Joann Store . I bought it at a steal with a coupon.

The two stitches that I have tried and worked well with the two yarns together are the e-Wrap and the Figure 8. I would say that the Purl will not work well with the fuller section of the Slub Yarn.

A little Pixie with Your Slub

Well I thought that with the tiny string of simmer in my yarn I needed to make something a bit whimsical. Immediately my mind went to Ticker Bell and her Pixie dust. With my ADD I was in a wonderland of Pixie that of course included a hat. So below is the result of my day dreaming about slub and pixie.

Baby Pixie Hat Pattern: (Video Coming Soon)

Slub Yarn Hat

Loom: 31-Peg ( I used the Red Knifty Knitter )

Yarn: About 60 yards of each. Slub Yarn and Worsted weight. I used a Joann Generic and Vickie Howell’s Sheepish in Chartreuse-ish

Stitches: Uwrap and e-Wrap

Cast-on: Use the thin end of the yarn to cast-on

Wrap all pegs – Uwrap knit

Brim:

Rows 1 – 3: Uwrap Knit

Rows 4 – 10: e-Wrap Knit

Body of Hat: e-Wrap Knit

Note: If you are using regular yarn – use the U-wrap version of the knit stitch and knit an additional 10 rows at this point. To see the difference between the 2 stitches click HERE

Now only knit 16 pegs – Decreasing by one peg on each end every other row until you are down to 2 pegs

Now only knit 15 pegs – Decreasing by one peg on each end every other row until you are down to 2 pegs

Sew up the two sides – You’re Done

Where can you get Slub Yarn ?

You guys know the usual players Amazon and eBay. I would also suggest Etsy and private independent sellers. And of course, Google it !

Hi Denise! When will you create a video tutorial for this adorable pixie hat? Love all you tutorials! So easy to follow ????

    • Denise Canela October 18, 2016 at 12:45 am

Hey Yvonne, sorry for the delay in response. I was suppose to do it right after the design – but I’m sooooooooooo disorganized 🙁 – I had to move on to the next project. I do love that little hat – so hope to have time to work it out in 2017. We will see – stay tuned

I can’t find any videos on youtube with novelty type yarns working on a loom. I would love to learn now to use a lot of it in a project and make it look more like large loom weaving.

I made a hat and cowl with the slub yarn – for the pattern: Click HERE. What other specialty yarn did you have in mind?

Did you try the links on the page? They are the words in red. There is a person on Etsy. Her slub yarn is in the picture.

    Hello and good afternoon,

I have stumbled on to your website before and happen to be new to knitting. I knitted only my second baby hat today using the stockinette flat panel stitch as learned by watching a video from another YouTube. My problem is that my project seems to be very hole-y. I can send you a picture if you wish.

What does unwrap knit mean ?

    • Denise Canela July 9, 2015 at 9:30 pm

If you mean Uwrap – it’s one version of the knit stitch. For more information: Click HERE

The hat looks amazing!! I spin my own art yarn or slub yarn and I do special order kinds of things. I have several different fibers in my arsenal and I can do any color you like. Visit my facebook page for more information.

Re my comment earlier. I really don’t use yarn made by slugs……… autocorrect strikes again, lol.

I LOVE slub yarn and use it quite a bit. I even use it by itself. It is a little challenging to do the purl stitch with, but if you are gentle and make a large loop when doing the purl stitch and then snug it up it works. A stitch that works really well with slub yarn is the Three Step Stitch. Since it is a wrap stitch it is easy to use and because it is an open stitch it shows off the thick and thin of the slug yarn very well. Another trick is to use a double strand of the slug yarn because a good bit of the dime where there is a fat piece in one strand there is a good chance there will be a skinny piece in the other strand, evening out the thickness a bit. I’ve made several hats with a double strand of slug yarn – making them with garter stitch brims and the Three Step Stitch as the rest of the hat and they are gorgeous and really show off the slug yarn beautifully.

What a neat effect! I’ve seen lots of this in mill end bin at my Joann’s and always passed it up because I had no clue what do with it! Has me thinking now! Your such a clever gal! I’m thinking I might have to use for some teenagers who like fun, different yarns and textures! Once again, Thank you Denise!

You are VERY welcome – always love to hear folks are getting the youngans playing with yarn. 🙂

Denise: Thank you for all of your fantastic instructional videos. I made the baby booties a while ago and they turned out adorable. I have two groups of ladies that make hats on the looms for the homeless. We call ourselves the Looney Loomers. There is nothing like seeing someone complete a hat for the first time and try it on. I have a group of 4th-6th graders making hats this week in a summer program at my church. Keep up the terrific work you are doing. You are fabulously awesome, oh and awesomely fabulous. A proud Looney Loomer

I tried to start a scarf on the blue Knit Picky loom with taffeta ribbon yarn but failed miserably due to the fact that the “tracks” on the top did not stay where they were put, and the next loop also tended to fall off. I found that the “yarn” was too difficult to keep out of the way and became an obstacle by getting in the way of the task. I guess I will continue to use straight needles to create the ruffled scarves. I still plan to work on becoming more proficient with looming. Any pattern suggestions you may have to make my learning curve easier are appreciated.
