How to Finish the Hat with a Flat Top
Some patterns shouldn’t have wrinkles or bumps when you finish the hat. There is a simple way to decrease the hat that gives you a nice crown with a flat top. The Flat Drawstring Cast-off is another great method but I find it a bit complicated for some people. Especially at the end when you pull you strings and sometimes they don’t pull correctly. I believe that anyone can manage this technique even true beginners.
The first time I did this cast-off was 2013 for my Loom Knit Striped Slouchy. It isn’t right for all your hats – just when you have a certain look in mind. For a free pattern of that hat click the picture.
Below is a text and video tutorial for the Decreased Crown technique.
3 Steps to a Flat Cast-off
It’s a good idea to read each step and even watching the video below before attempting this technique. It’s not difficult at all be it can be confusing. There are only 3 steps. Please pay close attention to all three so that you can finish the hat correctly.
Step 1: Knit Peg 1
Step 2: Move Peg 1 to Peg 2
Step 3: Pull the Working Yarn and Knit-off
Do Not Move the Loop on Peg 2 .
Repeat : Steps 1 – 3 Around the Whole Loom

To finish the hat with a Flat top you just need to follow those 3 steps around the whole loom. Then closing the hat is done just like you would if you had use the typical Gathered method of closing the hat. To see the complete process watch the video below, follow the written text or click this link: HERE
Step 4. Wrap the working yarn around the whole loom – cut the yarn
Step 5: Thread a yarn needle with the working yarn
Step 6. With the needle – feed the working yarn through each loop – ignore the empty pegs
Step 7: Remove all the loops from the loom – Your hat is off the loom
Step 8: Pull the working to close the hat.

Thanks, Denise…
Hi Alene, Do you mean the instructions on this page?
The “Easy Decreased Crown Method” of finishing a hat…?
Hi! I’ve been loom knitting for almost a year and learned so much from you! This is the only way that I know to decrease the crown and I can actually do it!
Thanks Again,
Renee (if I can do this anyone can!)
Renee you are too funny girl. Glad I could help ! A big hug and thanks for the thanks !!!
I want to thank you for all your hard work. I can follow your video tutorials so easily since you are clear in your description and showing exactly what and how to do something. I finished my first hat ever! Thanks again.
Kathy – it’s these kinds of comments that just make me sooooooooooooooooooooooooo happy. LOVE, love, love to read those words, ” I finished my first hat!” Thank you for taking the time to let me know that I played a part in it… and ….. THANKS for the Thanks – I really appreciate it.
I can’t print any of the patterns anymore, has it been blocked. I wanted to make a few of these hats and went to print, it will not let me. Tried to copy and paste, it will not let me. Help!
Hi Diana, sorry for the frustration – I don’t mind folks sharing the pictures on other sites and links back to my site- on the contrary I LOVE IT – but I have found my pictures cropped to remove my watermark and my entire patterns posted on another loom knitting website. NOT cool. This is my temporary solution until I can find a better one. Hope you can understand. Traffic and pattern sales pay for this website which isn’t free and the supplies I need to create those patterns.
Hope you can understand
Thank you for all your info and videos! I love this simple reduced closure. So much nicer then just the typical pinched pull. =)
