Loving with Looms Award 2013

I am happy to announce the First Annual Loving with Looms Award. Join me in honoring someone who has used this awesome art to express their love and care for others and their plight in life. The award, along with a $50.00 Amazon Gift Certificate is to be presented to a humanitarian loom knitter. Too often people dig into their own resources to knit their treasures with no thought to personal cost or gain. I just want to give them a little bit of love and a small tangible reward.

Hey, don’t be so humble, nominate yourself and use this opportunity to introduce others to your favorite charity. Some of us would love to know where we can send our loom knitted projects. We can also make a donation in your name to the charity instead of the Amazon Gift Certificate.

If you can not think of a single person to nominate would you please consider voting for my nominee listed below.

Here are the Loving with Looms Award RULES:

.

1. The Nominee must be an Individual. Not a Website, Organization or Group.

2. The charitable work must have been done with a knitting or weaving loom within the current year.

3. The charitable work must be verifiable, like a website, letters or pictures.

4. You can nominate only (1) one person, it can be you. Give a brief description of your nominees charitable work and the recipients. Links are Great. Use the comment box below.

5. The winner must have a valid email address and be willing to be featured on this site.

6. PLEASE only vote once. This is to reward charitable giving – Let’s play nice.

7. This year the number of votes will decide the winner Winner will be announced on November 22, 2013 before Midnight

* Vote in the Comment Section *

My Nominee is: Pali, One of the Founding Members of Knitting Rays of Hope.

.

Pali along with a group of friends loom knits hats for cancer patients. She always writes for the groups blog, Facebook page and Pinterest.  I don’t know how she has enough hours in the day considering that she is a wife and mom. Please visit the site and get to know the great humanitarian.

The About Us Page says: With this blog, we strive to raise awareness about Cancer, babies in the NICU and a few other causes that are dear to our hearts.  We have always struggled with finding a way to help others, and this was the obvious answer for us, having been so affected by this horrible disease, Cancer  We hope that the hats we create impact the recipients and their families to show people really do care. We started this effort and blog in the Spring of 2012 and have grown immensely with our awareness, skills and spiritually.  It feels great to do our little part in providing hope to those that are struggling with some pretty heavy issues. We actively pursue new recruits and can teach just about anyone how to loom knit a cute hat.  By no means do we think of ourselves as “crafty” or “artistic”, at all, but this form of knitting allows for anyone to hand create a beautiful hat. Please feel free to comment on our posts or contact us. ~Pali & Vanessa

I only wish I could vote for two ( Vanessa is awesome ! ) but I have to follow the rules too.  🙁

.

Nomination and Voting Ends 11/19 at Midnight

.

The Start Date in 2013: On This Holiday: The Sweetest Day – Third Saturday of October the nominations begin.

For Subsequent Years: The Loving with Looms Award will be Announced on The Sweetest Day Good Luck winning the Loving with Looms Award 2013 to Everyone Nominated!

I just want to ask one question, as it seems a bit one-sided, your contest. Do you not feel that by putting “If you can not think of a single person to nominate would you please consider voting for my nominee listed below” in the information about the contest that you are not swaying the vote just a tad? If you, as the creator of this contest, are also the judge, you should not have a personal interest in the outcome. There were several well-deserving individuals nominated here who, in my opinion, did not have a fair chance to win. This was made very clear in the final hours of the contest when your own nominee suddenly acquired an incredible number of votes in a ten minute span to overtake another nominee who had been in the lead for quite some time.

I am confident that many of the supporters of those who were not selected feel cheated by this obvious display of favouritism. Personally, I will continue to support my choice and will encourage others to send her the gift donations that she needs to continue her noble work.

    • Denise Canela November 22, 2013 at 10:34 pm

I am not the Judge. I nominated a person. My nomination like all the others gave the nominee one vote. I don’t personally know Pali. I learned about her work from the internet. I have no personal gain in her winning this contest.

I am amazed by your claim of my being one-sided. I’m sorry that you feel that way. I would say everyone who voted for anyone here did it because of reasons other then my nomination. You give me to much credit. I’m certain you came here because of the person you voted for not because of me. If it would make you feel better you are welcome to visit Pali’s page where you will see that she legitimately helps victims of cancer. I did my best to make this as fair as I could with what resources I have. Everyone will have their opinion and I respect that.

God is my witness and that for me is above all else.

How can names be added when they are not on facebook? There was one comment that it was students of a teacher. Wrong in my eyes.

    • Denise Canela November 20, 2013 at 7:06 pm

Sorry Dorothy I don’t understand your question. This award had Nothing to do with Facebook. Please read the rules for nomination that may help your misconception. Most of the voting was done by students – young, middle school and college students. If you can explain what is wrong with that I will gladly respond.

I vote for Emily Kubin. She is a wonderful young woman and began making hats for the homeless when she was still in high school. She is a wonderful young woman and has worked hard to get her charity up and running and they now have chapters all over the states. She so deserves to be rewarded for all her hard work and understanding and knowing that volunteering for those less fortunate is so important.

I’d like to nominate Emily Kubin (age 18) who founded Emily’s Hats For Hope Initiative in 2011 at age 17. She looms winter hats for the homeless & working poor. She has over 30 global spinoffs & EHFHI reached their 11,000th hat this month! Emily looms hats every day even while at college. She herself has loomed approximately 2,500 of these hats. Emily has taken her hat project to college where she is a Civic Scholar and is actively recruiting other students to help loom hats for the homeless.

She has been looming many, many hats for the homeless and has been instrumental in starting spin-offs in many, many other locations. Her charitableness seems to be never ending – even while attending a prestigious, difficult university. She is even starting a group at her university and is teaching other students to loom!!!

I was wondering why the total tally hasn’t changed for any of the nominees despite there being new votes in today. Is the site having issues? The numbers are exactly the same as they were a day and a half ago but new votes are listed for them. The top 3 nominees should have higher numbers today.

    • Denise Canela November 11, 2013 at 9:40 pm

Hi Jill, not sure where you are looking for the updated information. At the time that you left this comment ( 11/11/2013 at 4:58 pm ) the Last Update was (11/10/2013 at 12:02 pm ). I have to approve the comments and votes. There are a lot of folks voting twice despite the request to Please be fair. Sad but true. This is a one man (woman) operation with limited resources.
I hope you understand… Next year hope to be more automated. 🙂

I should like to nominate Emily Kubin. Emily started “Emily’s Hats for Hope” quite a time ago and I became aware of her about 2 years ago through Facebook. Emily has created thousands of warm hats for distribution to homeless and needy people, both adults and children. She has inspired hundreds of people to follow her lead into making these hats and is currently inspiring many of her college mates into this as well.
She is a very worthy young lady whose heart is set on helping those in need.

My vote is for Emily Kubin and her Hats for Hope Initiative. What an inspirational young lady. Not only did she start this when she was a young girl but has carried on for the past years. Many teens get an idea, start it up and then it gets put to the side. Emily has carried on and has now gone global with spin offs. I dont know them personally but her family, mum Jill and sister Julia also get involved. Lets hope she can get more people involved now she is at college. Go Emily you deserve this!

You can learn more about her project by going on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EmilysHatsForHopeInitiative

  1028. Shawn November 6, 2013 at 10:43 am

I would like to nominate myself. I’ve knitted almost 500 hats for various charities over the last 3 years. They have been given to Grace Place (daytime shelter for the homeless at Galloway UMC in Jackson, MS), all of my church’s newborns, the abused children and the Children’s Justice Center, and the cancer patients at Central Mississippi Medical Center. One or two Monday’s per month I also donate my time to teach loom knitting classes at Galloway which has helped my ministry to grow. If you go to page 12 on the below link you will see a photo of me (2nd from right) teaching one of these classes. All of the yarn for my donation hats is purchased at my own expense.

I continue to share my love through a loom knit hat because of the feedback that I receive. Just last month the director at the Children’s Justice Center (they see 2000 kids per year) said that when the box of hats was delivered and she let the children select a hat you would’ve thought that it was Christmas. That is the profound effect that a handmade hat can have on a child who has not known a loving environment. The reaction from these children greatly affects anyone who witnesses it so that I now have a few ladies coming to my loom knit classes with the purpose of learning to make more hats for the CJC.

So while my mission began with just me, I’ve been able to help it to grow by teaching my skill to others.

I want to nominate Araceli Mata, President of Looms for Lupus. Here is her website:
    http://www.looms4lupus.org/
The non-profit was started by 3 sisters when one of them was diagnosed with Lupus. In 2011 they started a knitting support group, now do marathons and loom knit scarfs to raise funds.
