The Great Loom Knitting Afghan Project

I’m really excited about this one. New patterns, new friends and a great charity. Eight designers including Brenda Myers author of “I Taught Myself to Loom Knit“, Kathy Norris author of The Big Book of Loom Knitting  and Renee Van Hoy author of The Loom Knitters Dictionary have come together for an amazing endeavor. The Great Loom Knitting Afghan Project is not only a book containing 13 beautiful patterns it’s a convergence of philanthropy and art with ALL profits of the sale going to support Doctors Without Borders. I am so proud of these 8 ladies !

As if that were not enough this book is also a community builder for us loom knitters. Everyone who buys the book is invited to join in a year of Loom-a-Longs where many of the designers and a few hundred of their closes buddies will be knitting the same squares at the same time with you and I. This means a lot of people will be available to help with concerns or questions about the little squares. Expect to get lots of ideas about the best looms, yarn weight, textures and colors. Did I mention LOTS of pictures. I love pictures. .

This will be GREAT – Don’t be Left Out !

The Little Squares

The 54-page The Great Loom Knitting Afghan Projecte-book also includes instructions on blocking, seaming and designing your afghan.

Each pattern creates a 10×10 square. This means that you can also use these squares as dishcloths and washcloths, just remember to use 100 % cotton yarn for that project. Three or four of these with natural or homemade soaps and a bow made with raffia ribbon makes for a very nice gift. Start early for next year’s holiday presents.

Make bigger plans and seam your squares for a nice blanket or bedspread. The possibilities are endless.

If you prefer a smaller 6×6 square or a larger 12×12 square don’t worry, you will just need to get the gauge information, do a little math, make a few pattern adjustments, test it on a swatch, block the swatch and you’ll be on your way. Don’t skip the swatch – adjusting knitting patterns can be tricky.  Loom-a-square

I will be trying to adjust some of the patterns to the Knit-a-Square required 8×8 size.  I can’t make any promises for all 13 patterns – mostly a few of the simple ones.

I am hoping that my blog readers, the folks in my Loom-a-Square group and my Facebook family will join in to help me with this task. Many other charities have different size preferences having others to work with makes it easier,

Learn New Stitches and Techniques

The Great Loom Knitting Afghan Project

The Great Loom Knitting Afghan ProjectI also see this book as a Great Stitch Resource. I plan to make some cool hats and scarves that will include the stitches in this book. I have my eyes and heart set on the little white square with the funky waves, another piece of art by Renee Van Hoy she calls Winged Horses.

And I surely need to learn how to make the green square with the incredible cable job. Looks complex but I don’t need to be concern because I know where to go for help if I need it.

Remember that this is the 2015 Loom-a-Long for the group on Raverly. There is a place to ask questions, voice concerns and get ideas. So if I get stuck trying to do the Wandering Turtle Tracks square, Carina Barron the designer or someone else in the group will be able to help me get through it.

This AWESOME Square Loom-a-Long starts January 5 – So HURRY

By-the-way, 7 of the 8 Designers have a Raverly Page, Some are on Youtube or Many have Blogs.

It is now January 5th. Where is the ebook?

    • Denise Canela January 5, 2015 at 7:22 am

Book download was sent days ago – check your email. I’ve had mine since the 1st. If you have a Ravelry account it’s in your library

I am so excited! Got Renee’s book The stitch dictionary! I love it! Easy to understand, and very well written. As a fairly new totally addicted loomer, it got me so excited that I just know I can do all of the stitches in the dictionary! I wish someone would do this for double knit! I have started my tiny heart afghan, and will post a pic soon. I’m doing it on the s loom, lord it’s going to be big! Nice tight stitch. I would like more info on the squares projects. I have finally got my creativity back and the joy of creating something beautiful! Thanks for all your help!

I own the Boyd Incredible Sweater Machine…can all the techniques in this book be achieved by this machine? I just got it because I am a beginner and I’m not having much luck. I can get it to work, but keep making mistakes so I haven’t made anything yet.
    Thank you!
    Cassandra

    • Denise Canela December 21, 2014 at 7:13 pm

Cassandra – I have no idea how this machine works.. I would tell you to give basic loom knitting another try. Start with a simple project like a hat. Here is a video just for TRUE beginners – very detailed : Click HERE

Thank you very much Denise! I was thinking about Machine Looming for some reason…LOL! I have all the other Boyd Looms too! And those I can use! Thanks for the link, I’ll watch it and see if I can make the hat!

        • Cassandra December 21, 2014 at 7:48 pm

Sorry, I have the Knifty Knitters and the Boyds!

          • Denise Canela December 21, 2014 at 11:55 pm

You can use either one. Let me know how it goes and send pictures to denise@loomahat.com or post them on Facebook!

            • Cassandra December 22, 2014 at 4:09 am

Thank you, I will. But it will be after the holidays as I’m making Sock Snowmen and Popsicle crafts right now.

So excited for this and what a wonderful charity to be supporting! I love looking at patterns and knowing that yes, I can make these on my loom.

Is the book only electronic ?

    • Denise Canela December 21, 2014 at 10:35 am

Yes. But it’s in a PDF format and can be easily viewed on any computer. Just like picking up any other pattern on the internet. If you have never tried an e-Book this is a great reason to try for the first time.

  6. Brunella December 21, 2014 at 9:36 am

Sorry, forget my previous question about international shipping for the book, I’ve just realised the book is electronic and pre-ordered it through ravelry!

  7. Brunella December 21, 2014 at 9:32 am

Can the book be pre-ordered for international shipping (Canada in my case)? And is the prize drawing for international people as well?

    Thanks
    Brunella
