Figure 8 Stitch on a Circular Knitting Loom
Warning, this stitch is addictive. It looks good, knits up very fast and it’s like an all-weather fabric. I promise that it is such an easy technique that at first seems a bit confusing. But I have broken down each step with words, pictures and video. There is NO reason you can’t learn how to do the Figure 8 stitch. You can whip up any project quickly. Although it’s a lacy stitch to warm it up, use a small gauge loom and add some chunky yarn. See the picture above. That’s a warm slouchy And so is the matching cowl. I made them both in just a few hours!
Try it, I promise you’ll like it.

The Pattern – Step by Step Instructions
Take your time going through each step. Read one at a time then I suggest watching the video from start to finish before starting the stitch. Once you get it , you’ll run through it like clock work.
- Find the Working Yarn
- The Next Peg is Peg 1
- Skip that Peg
- The Peg Next to it is Peg 2. Wrap that Peg
- Go Back Wrap Peg 1
- Knit- Off
- That’s It – YOUR DONE. – Repeat as Needed
The Video
.
As always I suggest watching the video completely before starting on your project. It’s a short video but it has all the information you need to get the job done. Plus if you didn’t get it the first time there is always that rewind option. If you still have questions, want to give me some advise or just to say hello you can do so in the comment section below.
Note that the video is a clip of an upcoming FREE Pattern, The Slub Yarn Slouchy and the matching cowl so stay tuned for that.

Denise thank you so much for all your tutorials. They are greatly appreciated. I received a looming set for my birthday over a week ago, and with all your help I have learned so much and have already made 5 hats. This figure 8 has been my favorite so far!
Welcome to the Family Diana ! 5 hats in a week – and you just started ! ! ! – By the way, the Figure 8 is one of my favorites too.
Denise-I don’t often comment on things but I really want you to know that the work you do is greatly appreciated! You explain things in a clear and concise manner-which is truly a gift. With your lessons I have gone from a confused beginner to a confident loomer in no time! Thank you so much for all of your hard work-you are fabulous 🙂
Thank you Meg !!!!
Hey Denise – UK-side here! Love your videos! My problem, if you can call it that, is that I’m knitting the figure eight stitch on a round even-numbered loom. and there’s a variation in the pattern! Half of it looks like ‘honeycomb, half of it looks like ladders! Any clues as to what I should do to just get one pattern?? Where have I gone wrong??
You know what?? Numbnutz here figured where she
was going wrong! What a doofus! I was adding a peg, so instead of missing one and wrapping 2 along, I was missing 2 – and wrapping 3 along!! It meant I had to undo the whole thing but although initially frustrated and angry with myself, I figure it’s all a learning curve… I’m so new to this – I have only been loom knitting for about a week, but have already made an e-stitch bobble hat, and a snood (or cowl) and this is all just part of the knitting/learning process! After 50-odd years of using needles – this is great!!
You are the best at explaining a patterns hugs and have a day that is blessed
Thank YOU Pepper !
I love this stitch! I made two squares for my patchwork afghan using this stitch with super bulky yarn but I tried something different that I haven’t seen posted anywhere else. It’s a really beautiful way of using the stitch. I did one square with alternating rows of figure eight and e-wrap knit, then one square with alternating rows of figure eight and purl. What beautiful and intricate looking patterns! Thank you for posting this stitch!
Thank you Tara for your kind words. I would love to see your squares. Take a look at the Diamond Lace stitch – which is a row of e-wrap and a row of Figure 8.. Looks beautiful: Click HERE .. I haven’t seen it with the purl – would LOVE TO. Share some pics 🙂
I can’t wait to try this!
#Anonymous, what did you make on the yellow 41 peg kk loom using this new figure 8 stitch ? I’m always interested in what everybody makes, it’s fun. I imagine if I could do the same..I am a newbie on the loom. I can make a hat, tried the 8″ square not too successfully able to get it to be 8″, and a scarf a couple of years ago. I look at my looms and wish i could just pick them up and make anything I want. I do hand crochet and knit however, but still want to learn the kk loom.
Oh my gosh….I do wish I was you ! You are so knowledgeable and good with this.
Hey Dorothy – having some hard times right now – trust me, you don’t wanna be me. But you’ve made me smile with your kinds words and I soooooooo appreciate that you took the time. You’ve blessed me friend. Giant Hug 🙂
Hey Denise,
I hope this will post. I’ve tried to post on several other blog posts of yours, but lately, it just goes blank and nothing shows up. I imagine it is something on my end, but I can’t figure out what. Just wanted you to know I appreciate all your blog posts and instructional teaching. You do such a great job and make it fun! I really want to use this stitch! I hope to do a hat and cowl…Thanks again!
Hey, D.A. don’t know what’s going on … I will look into it. A Hat and cowl pattern coming next week – God Willing.
