Farrow Stitch Hat Pattern and Video

Loom Knit Farrow Stitch Hat Pattern

Farrow Stitch Hat
.
This farrow stitch hat has rich texture and warmth. Perfect for a casual upscale look. The pattern appears complex but it is far from it. I designed it for the fans of the stitch pattern I published a few months ago and who had problems using it for their projects. Well here is the hat, stay tuned for the scarf pattern which will be coming shortly.

I hope the farrow stitch hat pattern works well for my friends Jo, Fey, Crystal, Laura, Kim and Linda. See, that I am truly listening ladies. A big hug for the inspiration

Note that I’ve used chunky yarn so everyone can see the stitch done with a variation. For those new to the site, look below for a picture of the original pattern. To get the written version and to watch a video : Click HERE

Supplies

Loom: Extra Large Round Loom – I used the yellow 41-peg Knifty Knitter

Yarn: 80-82 yards of Chunky or Bulky. I used Lion Brand Yarns Hometown USA in Color #108 Washington Denim. For the pom pom I added the Sensations Cello Eyelash in Chincilla – it is very similar to the  Lion Brand Fun Fur.

Hook: Any Loom Hook and Crochet Hook. I used the Knifty Knitter and Susan Bates with Grips

Yarn Needle: Any Needle – I used a cheap one I got on eBay – not a good idea – Better to use the Susan Bates Large Yarn needles

Markers: Any markers. I use the Rainbow Loom Rubber Bands because they’re tiny and cheap/

Pattern Notes: The pattern is made up of just 2 rows and 3 stitches of the U-wrap knit stitch and the Purl. The loom does not need to be divisible by 3 – just adjust the last few stitches. You can see who this is done on the video tutorial.

    Hi Denise,
I was wondering if you can use a ewarp instead of the uwarp?

    • Denise Canela November 24, 2016 at 9:23 am

Yes – the fabric will be looser and the hat a bit larger.

I just want to thank you for all the wonderful ideas you have. I knit all my items for gifts for friends and family and enjoy your videos and patterns

Thank YOU for taking the time to leave this positive feedback. I sooooooooooo appreciate it !

Hi Denise – thank you for your wonderful and easy to follow videos! Would using the chain cast on work for this hat and possibly avoid having to tighten the loops when it’s done? Or would that be too tight and sacrifice the stretchy brim? Thanks in advance!

    Hi Denise,
I want to make a hat for a 2 & 1/2 years old boy.which size of loom ring I should use ? As I am a beginer I would like your expert advise .Thank you in advance.

    • Denise Canela March 24, 2016 at 9:58 pm

2 year olds are tricky with the regular looms. Depending on the 2 year old you might be able to get away with the 36 and just use the u-wrap version of the knit stitch

Hi Denise, confessing to you that I didn’t believe you really meant for us to use 41-peg loom so I knitted this on 36-peg. Obviously hat is way too small so am frogging and starting over on correct sized loom. Question is: I’ve never wet blocked and don’t have access to small load washer so should I just wet in sink and then towel dry? Will this really add to beauty of stitches? Thanks for your great patterns and videos!

    • Denise Canela March 24, 2016 at 10:27 pm

Cis – so sorry for the delay. .. to wet block you don’t need anything special – here is a great example by Nicole Cox: Click HERE … and yes it does make the stitches stand out better

  6. Deb February 26, 2016 at 12:58 pm

Denise, thanks so much for all the patterns and video tutorials you share with us! Your site is the BEST and my go-to for how-to’s. I will send you pictures soon of what I have made so far. ?

Do you have written instructions on how to make the loom knit awareness ribbon beanies?
I saw a video (and am trying to find it) but I had a hard time following it and did not see written instructions. My grandson has Epilepsy and I want to make beanies for a fundraiser with a purple ribbon. Thanks in advance.

Deb, I thought I had answered this – if I didn’t I’m soooooooooo sorry. I don’t have any patterns for the awareness ribbon -but Amanda Pratt has a cool hat video that might help. Click HERE

    Hi Denise,

I just wanted to let you know that if you use smaller yarns, the stitch ends up looking like a Garter Stitch. It’s not bad, it still looks nice, and when stretched kind of looks like a honeycomb, which is nice. But I was unsure if you knew this. The yarn I’m using is two strands of Medium (worsted weight?) Caron Simply Soft. It appears that the chunkiness of the yarn really matters.

    • Denise Canela January 30, 2016 at 11:05 am

Cool – thank you for the heads-up. Would you do me a GIANT favor and share pictures on Facebook or email them to me denise@loomahat.com

    Hi Denise,

I’m relatively new. But I wanted to let you know that smaller yarns will give the hat a kind of Garter Stitch look when following this pattern. I’m using two strands of medium weight (4) yarn from Caron Simple Soft. The yarn is smaller in width though, than other yarns I’ve used. I have followed your pattern almost exactly (except I’m making mine a slouchy with a brim). It still looks great but does not look the same at all.

Thanks for this video…it helps me very much to understand a few new steps. I will try you way of doing the bind off for my next scarf.

You are the greatest teacher ?

  11. Brenda January 27, 2016 at 10:07 pm

Love this hat. You are awesome. Can’t wait to give it a try. Thanks.

  12. beverly January 27, 2016 at 1:54 pm

really love all your patterns…do you have an easy one for the IVana Headband. I saw something similar but not on the round loom

    • Denise Canela January 27, 2016 at 10:17 pm

No I don’t -and I try my best not to duplicate patterns that I know are already available. I do think Tuteate has a video on one.

For me this foray started because I lost my knitt cap,and no one I knew knitted but I have a shaved head so I got aloof and found your site. Thank you so much for posting these I now have several hats I’ve made and I have started giving them away as well.

    • Denise Canela January 25, 2016 at 10:54 pm

  15. Christine M. January 25, 2016 at 1:08 am

Hi Denise! So if I had #4 weight yarn use 3 strands of yarn together? I’m currently trying to make a scarf with this stitch and it’s not as tight as you show it should be. I’m currently making it with 2 strands of yarn.

Thank you for the video and I can’t wait for the scarf video

    • Denise Canela January 25, 2016 at 5:43 am

It should work – stiches might not show up as well – I haven’t tried it that way

  16. Jmummel January 25, 2016 at 12:39 am

This is a very nice pattern can’t wait to work it. Was just getting ready to start a new project.
